Ok here's my interpretation of the chain of events.

[shitstorm over foo wearing pents with sweatshirt]......

It's exactly that sort of double life that I find tasteless. Good clothing should be worn, not merely displayed for pretension's sake. How much of what's posted on this forum is just costume?

In other words, everybody wears costume. Saying something is "costume" isn't a valid criticism.

well this is a little contradictory to what i previously said about "costume" not being a valid criticism, but i think you can get what he means by "ubercostume". I dunno if you've seen this but it's really bad:

e.g.: GQ says "go skinny lapels and skinny tie for the 60s advertising look!"

and a whole bunch of yuppies do exactly that.

and yes, they're obviously doing it wrong

Fuuma is saying that the look is so rampant that even people who don't need to wear suits to work are doing the "mad men look".

There is a general theme of distaste for people doing the "mad men look" more because of the fact that they're doing the "look" without their own thought.

In other words, the people doing this look would wear a white tv fold pocket square because it's "part of the look", rather than the more valid reason that "i like pocket squares" or "it will complement the rest of what i'm wearing" etc.

i dunno, that was my interpretation.

Thanks for this. I am really tired of getting pinned for wearing a costume when I wear gray with a pocketsquare. The people who criticize others of this are the douches not the people actually getting dressed in the morning. And although Fuuma is probably a good guy, I don't mean to sound harsh, but doesn't Fuuma pretty much wear designer everything? The other day Thom Browne jacket (with square) Cloak jeans, Margalia or whatever sneakers. I think that is more trendy than dressing in a suit.

He keeps soliciting me to get a pair made up ( via Facebook) with his travel updates. I can't really respect a businessman who seeks to expand and collect new funds, when he is basically lying and deceiving his established clientele.

I wouldn't say that. He just gets behind. He always delivers.

I should have said, "light grey with dark earth tones". Medium or dark grey I like but this light grey is too much contrast for my tastes. (Perhaps the contrast has been adjusted?). I find it somewhat hard to pair true light grey with many jackets unless they are also light in color. A good pairing for a light grey (or pearl grey), to me, is a natural linen.

Men's business dress - suits, ties, pocket squares - is a costume. That was his point. He was saying that you can't criticize other people for wearing a costume without recognizing that business dress is another kind of costume. That's all.

Unless he is standing in the sun in mid afternoon, it's not exactly summer. It's still breezy and ig you are out post 5:00-6:00pm, the temp is going to be in the 50's. I've been wearing that type of jacket and walking a few blocks for lunch, have not felt uncomfortable.

You can really be a douche sometimes. Much douchier than the average joe who puts on a tie and wears a pocket square and is somehow to be considered a douche for that alone.

Ok.

However what I said was that:

1) MC wear (wearing an immaculate suit in rare fabrics, pocket square, patinated brown shoes etc) is costume, as is what I wear. I don't wear Repettos, I wear Gainsbourg's shoes. There is a large part of fantasy, distinction and belonging in dressing up, especially when people are as passionate about it as we are. I like that, its not a problem.
2) I see a lot of 20-30 something wearing mad men 60s GQ bullshit (not on the forum) and I don't like it. It is not a personal remix of various influences and aspirational cosplaying (Fred Astaire, duke of whatever, some 40s photographs, and so on and so forth) but a rigid styling guide followed as is with barely any personal imput.
3) I don't like yuppies and find people I know who tweet for a living to be wankers with joke jobs, so what. You are neither of those so chill out.
4) I mentionned several times on this forum that MC had an influence on my wardrobe and style, notably making me integrate pocket squares (in 2005 or 2006, not sure anymore). I like the way several posters dress and feel there is a certain kinship even though what we wear is quite dissimilar. I certainly don't feel that towards much of SWD.

And there was much rejoicing, the end.
