Introducing Kawatako Leathers & Accessories from Japan

We've spent the past year searching Japan for a leather accessory company that would fit the mold of a company we'd like to work with over the long-term. We wanted products which were built well, designed for daily use, had soul, and were sold at a reasonable cost. We've found that company, they call themselves Kawatako.

After World War II the Japanese became infatuated with the thick and heavy wallet styles which American troops had on the bases in Japan. Following the war a Japanese man which was staying with American troops taught himself how to make wallets by hand. Within months he was making wallets and belts, trading them with American troops and receiving American whiskey in return. He was so talented at producing intricate stitches and patterns by hand the Japanese dubbed him "The Small Hand Kid".

This was the beginning of classic western style wallets in Japan.

The two men behind Kawatako respect these early Japanese techniques in dying, cutting, and sewing leathers and have devoted their lives to the craft of leather accessories. Dying each leather piece by hand using the finest quality vegetable based dyes their pieces show an attention to detail which reflects their years of studying early American-style Japanese leather craft from the 1940's to the 1960's.

In Japanese "kawa" means leather and "tako" means octopus. Embodying everything sturdy and versatile, Kawatako pieces are leather with soul.

We start this journey with Kawatako with six items which are available now at all three Self Edge stores and in our online store. Check the online store for specifics on each item along with hi-res photographs:

That belt is so cool that I am going to load up a VISA gift card and buy it because I'm not supposed to be spending $200 on belts.

Actually nevermind it looks really cool but I don't want to wear that every day of my life.

^ I really like the sword-tip on the belt
So much so I had unlucky make me a similar belt (the dudes at Vari didn't have my size in the Kawatako belt).

No need for it really, the 36 and 40 nearly overlap.
The 40 leaves off where the 36 starts and due to how that works you'll have extra space in both just as you're not too small for the 36 or too big for the 40.

^ Unfortunately I'm stuck in the middle.
My usual buckle to middle hole distance is 96 to 98 cm.
I got a Kawatako dealer to measure a sz 38 for me, and the buckle to middle hole distance was 97.5 cm - pretty much a spot on fit for me.

If you're talking about the S-Hook from Flat Head that's made of sterling silver you can just bend it back into shape, the reason it bends is because it's made of sterling silver which isn't nearly as hard as brass.

yeah that one! i was wasted and the thing got caught on something and bent out of shape so i thought it was a good idea to use a wrench

unfortunately i used a little too much force so one of the s curves is shaped slightly off. still does its job though
