what he said ^^
MFA shows are a good way to see a good amount of work by (pretty serious) artists that aer usually not represented yet and generally broke.....a good combo for a buyer......

Having walked through a pair of School of the Art Institute of Chicago student shows....there was very little that seemed to be worth buying (but then again, I have been told that as an art school, SAIC is a good place for mediocre students to throw away their parents money).

I have heard quite good things about the student shows at MCAD however...

find artists...become an artist...trade/acquire work for cheap. 99.95 probability you will not own the next picasso, but you will enjoy what you own...perhaps more than a picasso because you knwo the creations story...which makes for good convo. hell, even if you do end up owning the next picasso it won't be worth THAT much till after you are dead, so enjoy art and don't fixate on some arbitrary value assigned by a dealer or an auction.
