I went on a shopping spree this fall and bought several sport coats and woodlore premium cedar suit hangers to keep the moths away. Last night, I was searching proper sport coat storage and came across an article by rave fabricare,
"Protecting Your Fine Clothes with Cedar the Double Edged Sword" and it says, "Because cedar wood (and all wood products for that matter) is highly acidic. As the wood ages, it gives off gasses/acids. And when those acids come into physical contact with your garments, the acids could possibly yellow your garments and deteriorate the fibers." And at the bottom the article goes on to say, "3. Never allow any of your garments to come into physical contact with cedar blocks or cedar rings. I would avoid cedar hangers entirely. If you have them, toss them!" After reading this, I went back and changed out the woodlore cedar hangers for the original plastic hangers that came with the jacket.
Anyone else use the woodlore premium hangers and had any adverse affects? What type of hangers do you guys use?
I do have an 18" wide X 2" thick natural hardwood hanger that I purchased a while back at the container store that does a great job supporting the shoulders of a jacket. Even though the article says these are acidic and gives off gases, these hangers seem to be coated. Are these fine for my jackets?
