The reassuring thing is that the owners will likely restore the car. Fortunately Mercedes Benz still has the capacity to produce parts for these vintage cars.

By restore you mean rebuild?

I don't know what they do but there was another 300SL, a silver one, that had been crashed and it was restored to its original standard.

In Germany, the law requires insurance companies to pay the hourly rates of a speciality shop such as the Mercedes Classic Center for however many hours it takes to restore a vehicle.

Even though LB is right that MB can rebuild a 300 SL (due to the fact that they have the original tooling, which is how they built the special "˜new' Gullwing's for the Sultan of Brunei), Mercedes isn't the best place to get a car restored, known individual shops like Paul Russell are a better bet; and whenever they can't make a particular item, they simply custom-manufacture a new one from scratch.

Yes, that's true or Karl Middlehauve for the Mercedes 600s. There's also Cochera in Spain. Oddly enough, the 300SL receives the most press but the beautiful 280SE 3.5 open car was built in smaller numbers than the Gullwing.

Seeing the 300 SL roadster hurts a lot.

This is why, in my humble opinion, important vintage cars should not be raced, at least not near the limit. If you must track them, fine. That's how they were meant to be driven. But IMO driving them hard in a race, as much as I love going to classic races, is like putting a great painting in direct sunlight. Once these things are gone, they will be gone forever. Yes, you can replace the body panels on a car. But losing the original body panels that some artisan crafted 50 years ago in Italy is a crying shame. It's very hard for me, because I believe that these cars should be driven and not just looked at and wiped down with a diaper. But I also think that tempting fate with foolish behavior goes too far with some of the rarer and irreplaceable models.

This is what happens to a 250 GTO when the owner loses it on a track while racing. I took this picture at Lime Rock. It had been crashed earlier in the season. Yes, the car will be repaired and yes, it will look just as it did before. But that front end of the car will never be the same. That is a terrific shame in my opinion.

Zjp-

There was interesting show on Discovery HD that showed Ferrari owners and their cars, and how some race at Lime Rock. I think they showed what you referenced above. They showed that guy going out in the rain, on a rain soaked track. Odd.
