Iron Ranger versus Gentleman Traveller

I'm looking into getting one or the other. I realized the only "boots" I owned were a few pair of Clarks DBs and some slip-resistant ones I got for unloading the truck at work, nothing I can wear in all weather and still like the way they look.

I'm looking into Red Wing Iron Rangers or Gentleman Travelers. I was mainly wondering what SF would consider the best of the two. I've read to go down a half size to a whole size, much like DBs, and I wear an 8 in Purcells, and a 7 in DBs, I was planning on going with a 7. Color is also a concern I have, and I want to be able to wear them with both black and brown, and while I believe I could wear either one like that, but I think the Rangers would look better with either.

Here are the colors I'm considering:

Iron Ranger in Amber Harness

Gentleman Traveler in Black Cherry Featherstone

Thanks in advance.

Black cherry goes with a lot of things. I wouldn't rule it out as a color. It looks fine with brown and especially good with black.

I feel like the GT is the more versatile boot of the two. You can pretty much wear them with any outfit that calls for a boot (unless you plan to hike or wear a suit). The Iron Ranger is much more in the style of a "work" boot and therefor a little more limited in its versatility. If all you've got is Clarks DBs at this point, you might be better served with the GTs because I feel they might work with a greater variety of clothing.

Valid point.

I would go for the GTs or look at different brands. Red Wing isn't the only boot maker.

If you only own canvas shoes and desert boots, you don't really have too many options.

The IR would limit you in what you can wear, but thats not a bad thing if you were lusting this specific style

I have the LL Bean Katahdins that are kinda similar in styling to the Iron Rangers... If I had the money at the time I would have gone for the Gentleman Travelers.

I've got a good sized shoe collection, it's just lacking when it comes to boots. The tread was one of my concerns with the Iron Rangers, and it's not that I don't like the cherry color, but I like the amber of the Rangers better. I ordered the Rangers from Amazon already, should I get the GTs as well and just return the ones I don't like? (its on my Amazon card so it's not like I'll be missing the funds) Also, what are your thoughts on the Beckman Round Boots?

There is a reason why these models are so popular. You can't go wrong with any of them.

Update: I have both the Iron Ranger in Amber and the Gentleman Traveler in Cigar ordered, I will most likely keep the GT and return the Iron Ranger(thank god for Amazon Prime).

If the Wolverine 1000 Mile didn't exist, I'd be happy with the GT.
