Do you think it is possible to get hand welting on a MTO G&G? For example could I get a Deco and pay more for hand welting, or is it just limited to bespoke lasts?

if they will do it but it would be very expesivie upgrade, IIRC when i asked about converting some of my RTW's over to my BS last and hand welting it was like nearly the same price as my BS, i think if that is what you want then you might be just better off going BS, because i personally dont think they will do it

What do you hope to gain by the handwelting? IMO the hand welting allows for a nicer chisel toe shape than available via machine welting. For me I went bespoke for the toe shape. The Deco last is a little too long for my taste.

Strange because making a last for somebody's foot requires a **** load of work, not to mention fittings. I would think hand welting on a last they already have should be easy peazy.

Perhaps he's looking for a shoe that isn't inherently flawed...by built-in, maybe even deliberate, obsolescence, by expedient methods that serve the bottom line but not the quality of the shoe.

It should be, but RTW operations aren't set up to do that kind of thing. In a very real sense, any RTW facility is a conveyer belt. Pull one piece off the line and the whole process stutters.

If you go into any of the manufacturers in N'Hampton, I would be surprised if they employed even one individual there who actually knew how to handwelt, nevermind having access to the the wax, bristles, awls and thread.

My apologies. I didn't pick up on that.

That said, I don't think anyone can control how a discussion will play out. I mean, if it's just you two having a private conversation, maybe...but then all the rest of us are unnecessary.

your insight is always appreciated. we on styleforum do love handwork, and most gravitate that way. just wanted to hear why it mattered to him.
