I've used the cement on sock liners come loose and it works well. I'm sure using it on the soles will work just as well. Another reason to get those $3 toe taps. smile.gif

$3 toe taps on a $1,200 pair of shoes?

Get the inset metal toe taps (that sets me back $35 at BNelson/VIP shoes.) A much cleaner look than the glued, stapled, or nailed on taps.

Based on the comments, it sounds like some people experienced peeling, while others did not.

Does this mean that the shoes that peeled are defective in some way? That is, why are some of the shoes peeling on their first wear?

i think its just a matter of varying combinations. based on the thread linked before, from the letter that JL wrote, it seems this is more likely to happen if you wear the shoes in adverse conditions, before the leather gets a change to be really worn in flat from regular dry wear.

it could be the way a person walks, or if they accidentally scrape the toe while walking..... it seems that its not really supposed to happen, but it could happen to anyone given the wrong combination of circumstances.

in the good news section, regarding my gables, the full socks, combined with some dr. scholls inserts (which happen to be really comfy) have done the trick. the shoes will stay, and now fit superbly!

again, huge thanks to nick @ bespoke for facilitating my not having to return the shoes. i am much obliged!

are the inserts adhesive and are you going to glue down the new sock lining?

both great questions! i was thinking about that myself.

the inserts are not adhesive, but the insole fills the shoe, and its bottom is rubbery like, so it stays in place really well. i think that that is better, as these things tend to wear out before the shoe, and when you adhere it, and then need to remove it, it becomes a pain to peel off all the little pieces that are stuck inside that shoe. and if you dont remove them, you feel all bumply underneath your new insole. without the adhesive, you can just pop it out, and put in a new one when needed.

im not sure about the new sock. the thing is, that with the half sock, plus the full sock and insole the fit is pretty perfect, and i dont want to mess with it. and the insert keeps the full sock in place, so i dont need to adhere it. also, the GG shoe trees dont fit with the inserts on top of the half sock.

all things considered i think i will just take them in and out as needed, but i may remove the half sock and glue down the full sock, or maybe glue the full on top of the half if when the shoes are worn in, if i find that one of those ways is consistently how i wear the shoes.

I agree, when I bought my first pair of JL's in Jermyn Street, they actually strongly advised me not to wear them in wet conditions the first couple of times because of the sole.

Agreed, note all channel sole will expose to this problem.... It is really no big deal, stop making a fuzz about it and wear the shoes, eventually the tip will glue back naturally.
