OK, so everyone knows that. But why does one shoe creak and another does not? Good shoes are on layer. In the heel area, you have the lining, the heel stiffener and the counter. These layers are supposed to be bonded together...traditionally with pastes. Too little paste and you'll get creaking.

But not using a shoe horn or a shoe that is too loose, encouraging the foot to walk out of the shoe, or just simple abuse such as using the toe of the shoe to kick off the other shoe can all cause a breakdown of the bond. Once that bond is broken it is difficult to see how the creaking can be stopped...although there are wonky fixes that sometimes work and sometimes don't.

Often as the shoe breaks in, the leather will stop moving around so much and the creaking will stop.

Thanks for the feedback all, I'll grind it out and see where I end up after 10-15 more wears.

DFWII, I don't indulge in any of those abusive habits (no horn/kicking off) my fingers are crossed that it fades with age....thanks for the information!

Our friend Justin "The Shoe Snob" went up to Kettering to visit the new G&G factory and came back with a very interesting report and lots of excellent pictures:

The Grosvenors? They are very nice.

I saw these in a Leffot announcement email, quite a good looking make up if I do say so myself.. Is it a hatch grain Rothschild?

The soles are a little too aggressive but the upper looks excellent! Perfect all around weekend shoe.

^Still like my Hove idea, and due to recent events, I have a Oakham combo that I'm going to mock-up for consideration later (even though I would like to keep it for myself). Would be pleased with either...
