Ethnic body odors.

I have an Indian friend. He refuses to wear deodorant for whatever reason. We played basketball the other day and he started to sweat. He smelt absolutely toxic. Even if I don't use deodorant, my body odor isn't that repugnant. What's the deal? Do all Indians smell like this? Do different ethnicities possess different type of body odor? Is there any evolutionary context to this? Can someone explain?

lol a lot of it is the spices/seasoning used in that culture's cuisine which lingers on those who eat it

I was considering this. I remember seeing a show on the National Geographic channel that showed how people who ate more eggs had worse body odor due to the sulfurs. I wonder if it is an inherited trait among Indians from a history of their diet, and not just because they had a chicken vindaloo the night before.

Diet and genetics definitely affect what we each smell like, and to some degree how "ripe" we each smell, but the STRENGTH of our odor is almost 100% a factor of hygiene (barring a disorder like TMAU).

I know a lot of white guys who stink up the room. Not sure ethnicity has anything to do with it. Deodorants are unknown in India and if the guy was fresh off the boat, maybe he just hasn't figured this out. Or he is just a slob and doesn't care.

It is simply down to the foods they consume, indian dishes mostly consisted of heavily seasoned food i.e. spices and herbs. Joke aside evey indian man who enjoys their traditional cuisines must shower often !!!

Diet has a minor effect. I am Indian and I eat Indain food almost every day. I don't smell any different from anyone else - some combination of soap, aftershave, deodorant and moisturizer.

I've played basketball with a couple of white guys who also smell pretty rank - don't think they use deodorant and they didn't smell any different from any other dude who didn't use deodorant. Since we seem to be working with small sample sizes in this thread, both happened to be Mormon. Maybe Mormons have something in their diets or habits that gives them nasty BO?

I usually hold my breath whenever I pass by the IT department of my company (take a guess on the ethnicity of the employees there).

Not sure how to describe the smell but it is a combination of onion and garlic.

That said, there are others who does not smell remotely bad...I am thinking it is more a matter of hygiene.
