buyer wants to pay with check or money order?

Ebay buyer has no paypal account and wants to pay with check or money order? Should I request payment with a check or mo? I won't ship until the payments clears my bank. Or should I pass on this sale?

Thanks,

Its technically against the "rules" but if you were to consider it, Id demand a DCON number the day he sends it, and make it only a USPS MO.

Thanks,

If he's fine waiting until payment clears, why wouldn't you? No risk to you.

Other than having to wait for payment to arrive, I can see no downside to accepting a Money Order, especially a USPS Money Order, as those can be cashed at the Post Office. I would be less enthusiastic about a personal check, but if they are willing to wait until the check clears, what is the downside? No credit card chargebacks to worry about. No Paypal ruling in favor of the buyer no matter what to worry about. It seems like a good deal, for you.

USPS MO should not be a problem.

USPS MO or personal check held till clear should be fine if dealing on ebay. dealing here in b&s...no way...too many flakers.

I believe....though I may have it wrong....that it is against the 'rules' to ADVERTISE the acceptability of other forms of payment, but that checks and MOs are not actually prohibited. I can't imagine WHY they would be pushin' the use of Paypal.....unless, it could conceivably have something to do with the fact that they bought it.....

--------------------------------------

THIS is the key, the semantics:

" Payment methods not allowed on eBay:

For most categories, sellers can't ask buyers to:

Send cash through the mail

Send cash or money orders through instant, point-to-point cash transfer services (that are not banks) such as Western Union or MoneyGram

Mail checks or money orders (except for items in categories specifically permitted below) "

**Note that a 'seller can't ask buyers..." Thus, there is nothing in the policies that prohibit a BUYER from requesting that a check or MO be accepted....!

---------------------------

- As an aside, ain't it exciting to find that ebay has decided to charge the final value fee on the entire payment, including.....yes, the SHIPPING cost portion. That, as they assert, to encourage lower shipping charges. Wonderful. Great strategy: When operating under a business model that, necessarily, involves outside sellers/suppliers, KEEP tweaking and stroking the selling policies to make it more difficult for them to operate effectively/profitably.

Seller has to pay PayPal fee, and that is the main source of revenue for PayPal.

I offered to pay via USPS MO dozens of times and have only been refused 2-3 times. There is no risk to the seller - hell, you could cash and not send the item and there would be no real recourse from the buyer. As long as the seller holds off on shipping until the MO/Check clears, he has nothing to worry about. Some of the sellers I've dealt with it have preferred a USPS MO as there are no fees and the money goes directly into their pocket, not into their paypal account.

I remember buying stuff on ebay before paypal was around and sending checks / MO's. Old school. Why doesn't dude pay with paypal? You can do it now without even opening an account.

I believe he was being sarcastic.

I also do not think it's against the rules unless you set the auction to only accept bids from buyers who have a paypal account... so, you can't pass on the sale. Personally, I'd rather receive a MO or Check any day of the week.

don't do personal check. i had a guy buy something from me and 2 months later, well after the check cleared, cancel the check. so i was out item and $.
