^+1 to all above. I also remember my dad taking the back off the television, pulling all the tubes out of their sockets and taking them to a tester thingy at the hardware store. Find the faulty tube, replace it from the store's stock, head home and replace all the tubes and voila! TV works again!

I can hardly remember a time when there wasn't an on screen information guide on the TV. My generation must be spoiled. These were some of my favorite shows growing up: Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Sea Hunt.

Life With Riley.

Queen For a Day ( my Mom watched this one )

And Dragnet was my personal favorite.

Oh Yeah, the TV set was a huge Dumont with about an 8 inch screen ( or so it seemed ).

This Dumont commercial is pretty cool.

You missed the excitement of receiving this every week:

It was a sad day when newspapers started publishing listings.

My kids don't understand getting excited to watch TV. Descent programming wasn't at our fingertips back then (mid 60s). Saturday morning was worth getting up early to see 'cartoons" such as Johnny Quest, etc. Now days if you don't like what is on 24/7 just go to the computer and find something there or netflix... Also, we have lots of TVs and computers in our house. Back in the day we were lucky to have "1"! After school my mom was usually watching Soap Operas so we went out and played just to get the hell out of the house. During the week we would watch sitcoms together as there wasn't much else to do, and it was pretty good family entertainment. Now my kids piss me off because if it isn't exactly what they want to watch, they can find better things to do such as playing xbox on another TV, or mess around on the computer. Boy have things changed.

I remember when cable in New York had lettered channels. I believe channel J had the late night erotica.
