The felt doesn't need holes, btw, you can easily stitch through it. I don't know why she did it by hand; perhaps/probably because of the reason you mention.
that's a good morning or good night to you sir?

New supplies:

Another sweater. Repaired before, but:

Felt options. The first choice was brown, but this particular brown didn't look good on the sweater to my eye. Thus, navy:

With brown DMC (Double Mercerised Cotton) yarn:

Determining the right height with sweater on:

Half stitched with a new type of stitch (feston):

looks good, i too have experience with patching elbows on my well worn and beloved shirts. however a true perfectionist would have patched both sides of the elbow, it is important to have the sweater look good on the inside as well as the outside, as we are members of styleforum and have the highest standards when it comes to clothing.

any place that has instructions for that type of stitch? I have a corduroy blazer that I will eventually put leather elbow patches on (which I believe come with holes pre-punched for sewing) but I have no idea what stitching method to use to attach them.

I'm not sure if "feston stitch" is a correct or commonly used term in English. Perhaps someone here knows the most common name of the stitch. Then, you can probably easily google instructions.

Try "blanket stitch".

Hmm, leather and suede elbow patches. I wonder if you could cut one in half, make a pocket, and transform an old OCBD into something approaching a Baron Wells -type shirt....

noobizor, I bought some pre-made brown suede elbow patches exactly for that purpose. I was going to make a few 'name tags' and other details with the two patches. just cut them up and stuff.

NOBD, how long did it take to handstitch that?
