Where and What hotel in NYC

Need some advice:
I recieved an all expenses paid trip for 5 days to NYC.
I want to shop (our kind of shopping), see the NY Phil, and hit some great eateries.
With that said, I have a hotel budget of $400.00 a night.
Where should I stay? I think there are some W hotels that fit the budget. Any one have some advice of what area and what hotel to stay in that is close to shopping, great food, and is $400.00 a night or less?

The Palace usually has rates starting around $385. It's on Madison, and conveniently located for shopping.

You can take my bed and I'll sleep on the couch for $400 a night. It has a pillow top mattress...

I am not a fan of W hotels.

Do you want old school uptown or hipster downtown? Shopping and great food are available everywhere or a quick cab ride away.

I like old school luxe if possible.
Hipster isnt really my style.

Old school luxe will be tough at that price point. I like the St Regis if you can find a deal. Unless you need the hotel experience consider an apt rental. Last month I rented a 750 sq ft apt for a week for $160/night all in. A $400 budget could get you a pretty nice place. http://www.homeaway.com/search/keywo...ty%2C+New+York lefty

If you want the upper east side, which is near the shopping, try hotel plaza athena. It's old school but just went under a multi million dollar renovation. Also the surry hotel.

The Surrey has some deals maybe check them out up on 76th off of Madison.

Also, the waldorf starts at $300 a night according to orbitz, but the rooms are tiny. The Surrey seems to be exactly what you are looking for. It's classic, right by all the stores you are interested in, and at the right price. Whatever you end up doing, enjoy!

Le Parker Merridian is a balance of luxe / modernity, but very nice and well located. If you can get lucky and get a room at the Waldorf Towers for that budget (unlikely, but worth checking) they are awesome. The Waldorf Astoria has a beautiful lobby, but the rooms are a little lackluster. I don't know what became of the Riga Royal, but when it was a JW Marriott, it was one of the nicest hotels I'd ever stayed at. I got an awesome suite upgrade for like $300/night.

Honestly, the UES while a nice place to live would be pretty dull for a 5 day stay. I would look at a boutique hotel in a more interesting neighbourhood - the Gramercy comes to mind. lefty

Agree with those who have said staying on the UES would be boring. I'd stay downtown. I stayed at the Trump Soho a few weeks ago and liked it. It's in a great location as far as walking to shopping and restaurants and it was less than $400 a night.

I don't see a lot of old-school luxe opportunities downtown. But for modern luxe, the Grands and the James are both great.
