13 hour layover in Amsterdam - what to do? - Page 3

I don't know that I'd spend the whole day in a museum - either you'll be pissed that you missed seeing some other things or you'll be anxious to rush through the exhibits and later you'll feel like you wasted your time doubly so.

Definitely do not eat a space cake or toke up late in your visit if you plan to get back to the airport.

If they're still around and you can time it right, Mike's Bike Tours (I'm sure there are others, too) is a pretty relaxed way to get around, take some photos, see the sights, and maybe stop in for a beer at the end. You will probably hit the major highlights, which is about what you can expect in seven or eight hours anyway.

The Van Gogh museum can have long lines some times of the year. Something to consider if you are only in town briefly.

Consider
- a canal boat cruise
- beers and dinner in a dutch brown cafe (ask your concierge for a good one)
- a bike tour if the weather is nice
- evening wander through the red light district
- wander around town (dam square, liedseplein, etc...)

if you are really interested in the Van Gogh check the opening time and hit it early on Sunday?

I was afraid of the potential lines and spending my one available day in the museum. I think I will just plan on leisurely wandering around town and checking out anything that catches my eye. Beers and dinner are planned as well. I will ask the concierge for recommendations. Anyone have places in particular that they enjoyed?

I like the van goh museum, also the rikhmuseum is pretty cool.

indonesian food is very good, and a little more upscale. hang out at ligtsplien, the plaza where a lot of street performers hang out saturday night would be cool. just walking around it cool. I'd try to stay in a hotel downtown, possibly by the train station - getting to the airport by train is really easy.

anything specific that you want to see?

I am staying at the Novotel City centre. From what I can tell that puts me not that far from everywhere. I honestly have no idea what I should see. I am thinking based on the time I have to just enjoy walking around and seeing the city for the first time.

it is one of the best walking cities in the world. do walk around teh red light district, just to see lots of freaky stuff. walk from the train station to rembrants plien and then to lightsplien, then around the red light district - that is only about 2-3 hours. get some "vlameese frittes" fries with sauce (my favorite is mayonase and sate sauce). there is a chain of automats called Febo, you should have a meal there.

enjoy

You could probably squeeze in some time to see the Heineken Brewery as well, I loved seeing how they made beer. If it's raining I suggest a canal boat, you'll get to see the city without getting wet all the time.

+1 and +1. If that is your interest, then the time is well-spent, even with crowds. But if not, then the take the other suggestions in this thread.

Another potentially crowded, but interesting tour is the Anne Frank House. Again, if that is of interest to you, you'll be in the only place that has one.

about the sights, you should define what type you want to see and then report back here.. just too many options right now.

About the above:

the fries are called a "patatje oorlog" which is translated, fries at war. If you decide to order it make sure you get a "frikandel speciaal" as well, which is a meatstick with curry, mayonaise and chopped onions. Might sound disgusting but personally I love them .

about febo, great when coming out of a club at night for a snack, not so good during daytime

Somebody probably already said this, but Vlaamse fries with lots of mayo are a must.

No frikandel.

Kroket - or at least Bitterballen and Vlaametjes with your beer.
