When is polo shirt more right than dress shirt for dates/being out?

Hello fellow men,

I'm a beginner both to this forum and to dressing well. Please point me to the right place if I'm not asking the right questions.

What are the situations where a casual dress-shirt with sleeves rolled up is too much and a short-sleeve polo shirt or t-shirt is more appropriate?

My context/goals:
to be ready for a lunch/casual-evening date on any day without changing after work
to look better than other guys around me in front of girls
I'm 22
have no dress code at work(anything is allowed)
assume I'm at room temperature indoors or outdoors

To expand the question a bit, I thought of this strategy for myself. Casual dress shirt, but not flashy like for a nightclub(I dislike night-clubs). Any pattern but mellow/fun. Sleeves rolled up. Is that ever too dressy for a date or "out with friends" evening? I wanna stay on the side of dressy without going over.

I know this might be a bit vague, but any sort of thoughts on this would help me out.

What are your favorite clothes to wear in public? Whatever the answer is, that is what you should wear on dates. And if you want to look better than other dudes in front of chicks, I'd focus more on what comes out of your mouth than what you're wearing. Be funny and encourage drinking!

honestly, i'd say simply look around you. if every other guy is in a dress-shirt, then the polo might not be appropriate. you want to "look better than other guys around me". just adapt to your surroundings. and fit is key as always.

According to the WAYWRN discussion thread, polos are not universally SF approved. Personally, I'd stay away from the polo unless its really hot. And by really hot, I'm talking desert standards. 80 is cool here. 90 is still bearable. 100 is hot.
