Definitely intended and, in a way, made him more accessible to the average male viewer. We all like to play up our strong pimp hand on these here internets, but most of us probably weren't naturals with the opposite sex growing up.

It's unfortunate the show turned into such a mess the last several seasons when they added characters to the main cast. But the second through fourth seasons are still laugh-out-loud funny and, at times, compelling television. It was certainly goofier than the Wonder Years, even before the show lost all semblance of reality. But the writers kept the show relatively realistic with regards to the typical problems of adolescents.

Dan Laurie may be among the best TV dads ever. The guy was intimidating as fuck even though he only occasionally raised his voice. He nailed the stern demeanor but played it with such delicacy that you never lost sight that ultimately, he was a caring guy.
