but from personal experience... are Peter's house fabrics "decent" enough if i ask for the better quality ones?

searching through this forum i think someone mentioned they were decent enough if you were on a budget, but only one person mentioned that. no other comments

There are a good number of on-line fabric vendors, on eBay, but also Minnis, Dugdale and a host of others sell short lengths. I believe there is a collection about them on the Cutter and Tailor forum.

I guess it's a question about what you want. Peter will have the basic suit things: grey, blue, herringbone and pinstripe, so if that's what you want, you're fine. Quality will certainly be acceptable, and Peter is very good about telling you exactly what and how. If you want anything in linen, you will be especially well-served. But I also just like to pour over fabric catalogues and stumble upon something that shouts at me at that instant, so that's just me.

I'm not sure about the reason for your confusion about this. Remember that VBC has a number of books, some of which have high super numbers and cashmere content. Maybe you're confusing the high end VBC books with the entry level ones?

I've seen Chan on his last 3 visits and I can confirm that entry level suits still cost 1100-1200, maybe even less, and that at 1300 you have entry level British cloth available.

Also, while prices have gone up, the increases have definitely not been in the 10-20% range as reported on SF. More like 2-3% On all the books I was looking at in March, the prices went up $20-30 since November 2010, and there was a similar increase from June 2010.

These reports of Chan's price increases are consistently exaggerated, unless Chan charges less on their NYC visit than they do for other cities. $1300 gets you some of the less expensive cloths from the prestigious mills, like Harrisons Fine Classics. VBC and some lesser known brands (I don't know Dugdale specifically) are 1100-1200. There might have been some cheaper than that.

Of course, Holland and Sherry and Scabal are going to be more expensive. But Harrisons, Minnis, etc. are quite good.

In any event I would not recommend that the OP cheap out on fabric. I would buy budget suits at Brooks Brothers or whatever and save up to get a bespoke suit out of decent cloth.

How much cheaper is Chan (if at all) if you are actually in HK?

It is the same price, but you can have more fittings if that is necessary
