Alden Modified Last: If You Wear, or are Interested, Please Read - Page 54

I am likely in for a simple black shell shoe/boot. Cap toe or plain toe are ok. Prefer shoe to boot. Only interested in leather sole for this.

Hey PhiPsi32, since you're working with Rafael at MS, I thought I'd ask you this question.  Awhile ago, I was speaking to MS (I think it was Rafael) and he basically laughed at me when I talked to him about one of the more exotic shell colors on a Modified last (boot).  Do you think that is still the case?  Do we have a zero chance in hell to get an MTO of a Modified last boot in say, Ravello?  Or even Cigar?

My next to-die for purchase is going to be a Ravello boot on a last that is NOT on the Barrie (I have yet to see if the Plaza or Grant will work for me).  And I'd prefer not to go through the hassle of ordering from Anatomica in Paris.

sadly, even without the recent carmina price increase, their cordovan is out of my price range :poorpeopleproblems:

Price from Carmina webstore or skoat isn't bad at all, same or less than Alden shell

It's quite easy to order from Anatomica

I would say that an exotic shell from Moulded has less than a zero chance.  At least right now, it's not likely at all.  Ordering from Anatomica isn't hard; it's just much more expensive.  I'm waiting for a ravello PT boot for them.  Alden has not confirmed the order nor is there any indication if or when it will be.

I'm moving on to Carmina if I can get a fitting.

The thread was started for this reason, and I found out, the hard way, Alden would not budge. Exotic shell on the modified is available in Japan (Lakota House and Anatomica JP) and France (Anatomica). That's it, I believe. I was trying to put together a petition first to try and persuade them, but I never got to my 100 names. If J.Crew offered a modified last shoe, we'd be in business foo.gif

Carmina does not offer a banana type last. Your best bet is Vass P2 or 3636, in calfskin. I will report back on Vass when I get my pair.

Would like to hear more on this, and why calfskin only?

I was under the impression that the Forrest last from Carmina has a narrow(er) waist.
^My take is that Forest past fit is more similar to Alden Aberdeen or possibly Hampton that Modified. It does have a reasonable amount of arch support, but not to the degree of Modified.

I'll take what I can get.  Thanks Frank.  I'm actually contemplating a black shell cap toe by George Cleverly.

I'm curious, what is the best way to order from Anatomica. Are people sending emails? International calls? Do they have English-speaking staff?

Is anyone interested in the black suede PCT boot on a single leather sole from Moulded Shoe? I recently wrote to Rafael who said they had no plans to re-order this style unless they could get 6+ confirmed orders.

CREATOR: gd-jpeg v1.0 (using IJG JPEG v80), default quality

I thought the suede might be a cheeky alternative to an otherwise formal black boot. I also have a handful of foot issues (one of the reasons why I wear the Mod last), and I find the suede to be more comfortable on the top of my foot than calf or shell.

In his email Rafael also listed a few of the open/pending orders. A few interesting combinations in case anyone was interested:

-black alpine wing tip boot (lug soles)
-black alpine indy boot
-brown alpine indy boot
-brown chromexcel wing tip boot
-burgundy calf plain toe boot

Lastly, this question isn't specific to the modified last, but does anyone know how Alden's margins compare on shell sales vs. calf/suede? Obviously price is higher, but how much higher are costs?

I don't dabble in black suede sadly, but the black indy might interest me.. thanks for the heads up cheers.gif

Generally, I would add about $200 for shell.

Black suede doesn't do it for me.  Brown, tan, snuff, navy suede are all great colors (I have make ups in each).

Black alpine is great.  The texture of the leather makes it much more interesting than standard black.  At the moment, I'd be interested in a black shell boot.  But not much else in black.

I agree, black shell I'm in no question for almost any offering (prefer boot)

I would prefer a boot myself.  I'm intrigued by the neo-cork sole but I can do a single leather sole too.  I'd like to have a cap toe with all eyelets, but I'm willing to consider a plain toe as well.

****Edit*****

Specifically, nickel eyelets to add some contrast.
