These are all part of marketing.

You're thinking of advertising, also part of marketing.

also 'advertising' has changed. ie, look at the influence brands have on message boards and blogs.

Note to self: Extend the "never talk about what you do for a living when you're talking to a girl" rule to include "never talk about what you do for a living when you're posting on SF".

Good points, and I was probably getting a little to jargon-y; not many people (strictly within the realm of my professional experience) use the term "advertising" because it's a) kind of narrow and b) has something of a negative connotation.

And yeah, branding tends to fall within the realm of the marketing department. I was more so speaking to Fuuma's point.

I'd say the closest some of these brands get to marketing is a) promotion of a runway show or other product display and b) appearance in advertisements from retailers.

They also create long-lasting relationships with certain magazines/stylists/photographers so as to have their wares displayed in shoots but that's about it. A point common to many of those brands is to shun marketing out of ideology (they hold it in contempt, a point they often share w. their customers) and practical adaptation (they can't fight YSL's advertising power and network at places like Vogue). A strong marketing push would also possibly cause their customer base to react negatively and even destroy their branding efforts.

And why is almost everything on the website and in the catalog denoted as "a collector's item." I find that to be absolutely a stupid and laughable declaration. I mean, really....J. Crew knocks off a workwear shirt pattern popular in the 50s (name your decade) that everybody and their brother is knocking off, and, by its own estimation, the J. Crew POS becomes a collectors item. Hilarious....I think I'm going to start a thread asking SF members to post their best J Crew collector's item...

its like buying a Dean and Deluca shirt or nathans hotdog shirt. it only makes you look like a worker at said establishment. working at those places is fine, but paying $50.00 to look like you work there is dumb.
