And I don't mean small-scale neats, I mean those mid-size geometrics from the mid-90s and those really large-scale prints from the early 90s (copies/derivatives of the fabled Hermes "scarf ties"). Basically, the kinds of prints SF hates. I bet that you're going to see a lot of them appearing in shops over the next few years. My reasoning is firstly the 20yr fashion cycle, but more importantly, printed women's dresses are really big at the moment and men's fashion will catch that trend up soon. You can see harbingers of this already: Paul Smith has a few, Drakes has loads e.g 1, 2, 3, 4. All those are on nature themes (animals, florals, etc), but I sense that mid-scale (and maybe even large-scale) abstract geometrics will also make a comeback.

It kind of annoys me, because then my kind of ugly tie will be everywhere and I'll have to wear sedate ties until the trend dies back down again. But I''ll use it as a chance to stock up.

Anyone wanting to get ahead of the trend should scoop up nicer examples on eBay/etc now, while prices are still cheap.

Florals are starting to explode in SWD again as well. I wouldn't be surprised to see them make small appearances in CM too. I wonder if mute floral shirts will be pushed with suits as well, as crazy as that sounds.

To read this just makes me sad. There are a metric TON of posters who do "loud", "controversial" fits who are loved and respected by many. Gianni, Tira, AAS, etc. The list is literally massive. They do it and they do it well, and it is well received. Rather than learning how to get to their level you guys seem to think that the answer is to shut down because it hasn't been well received.

Let me make it clear. We are NOT against "loud". We are against loud done poorly, frankly in the same way that we are against sedate done poorly. The answer is NOT to stop posting loud stuff, it is to improve your loud stuff.

Most of Tira and AAS's ties aren't really that loud. They may be different, but that is in the pattern and not in the colour & texture, both of which are commonly found in more sedate fits. Gianni is pretty much the only one who does "bad" loud well.

A more interesting question is how to do "bad loud" well. A few observations:

- Gianni often uses DB suits, which have naturally higher buttoning points, and show less of the tie. In this way, the tie becomes more similar to a PS - rather than being a line down the centre, it lies bunched up above the lapels. And, of course, here at SF we have nothing against PSs which would make the most obscene ties.
- In terms of colours, the other items are usually either dark and saturated, or light and desaturated. There are no saturated mid-tones, which compete with the ties for attention, creating an incoherent mess instead of a single focal point.

Starting with these two basic principles, I don't see why many of the ties in Stitches' bad list could be employed more tastefully. Unless they're really shiny.

Floral shirt, yes, but it was with an odd jacket, not with a suit.

But yes, they will increasingly be paired with suits I think (in fact, they have been for some time). I'm probably going to try it out once or twice this summer at least. It's easier with odd jackets (and casual suits) though.

I might y something like a lavender one with my beige suit, once I finally get it altered.

Dark purple and white is a very striking combo, and it fun to play up the imperial connotations. Good for an evening out.

An interesting observation.

It’s this sort of contribution that makes me grateful for the different perspectives provided by the European (and other non-American) contributors to SF.

I shall open a bottle of Fullers ESB in your honour tonight.

Cheers,

Ac

Anyway, a more general remark: at first I thought you were wearing light olive trousers, and I found it was a very nice alternative to grey trousers. Grey trousers are ubiquitous because they are so versatile, but in fits like these non-grey pants might actually be the optimal choice for once, or at least a good alternative!

Thank you very much guys. I wouldn't mind a light olive wool trouser. I would use it with no problem. Would Luxire have a fabric like that?

Luxire should have that. Suitsupply also has some trousers with a very light olive tint.

My husband wears a lot of floral shirts, including with suits. He's a very snazzy dresser though, more of a 'make my own style' kinda guy. I couldn't pull off his stuff at all, but he nails it quite often.

And it's finally spring in Vancouver! Glorious sunny evening, let's break out the summer wear. Jacket is linen (from my HK tailor), shirt is new from a new tailor I'm trying here, James Custom Tailor, pants are Samuelssohn (they're a lightweight navy twill worsted, bit hard to see from the picture). Tie is Impuntura (I'm really up on those guys lately, still can't find anything about 'em on the internet). I'll go fix the knot...

The problem with SS is that their trousers are very very slim. My legs don't fit on them. :(
