HOF: What Are You Wearing Right Now - Part III - Page 4994

fv2EDDl.jpgbugger, this is one of my favourite ties. The reason I had gone for that colour PS was to match it with the light blue in the tie, also there is some light blue in the jackets check pattern.

Yes, the jacket is an orphan due to catastrophic failure of the trousers crotch!

I kind of like the tie, personally. I think you could tone it down with less contrast in the shirt; light blue, or ecru, maybe. The tie is not classic, or CBD, but I don't think it's ugly. I also think the pocket square pulls the tie or too much, so white linen, or no square, might help to tone it down.

I may well be in a small minority that like the tie.

Large print florals or paisleys are mostly disdained here and PS to tie matching can only be executed with great care and knowledge. "This is blue and this is blue so they will look good together," is rarely true.

We noticed that it matched the light blue in the tie, and that's actually why it was bad. There are a few things that you want to match in an outfit and a few things that you want to avoid matching. Due to the ubiquity of tie/pocket square sets, we advocate NOT matching your square to your tie as a general rule.

For now stick with white linen/cotton in a TV fold.

If you want to move up to colored squares then you can attempt a little of the following:

1. Roughly match your square to a color in your shirt or similar

2. Roughly match your square to your pants color

3. COMPLEMENT your square and tie (or other major colors in the outfit)

ImTheGroom, forgive my ignorance but "CBD"?

Fair enough, I had always believed that the PS should try to match a colour in the shirt and/or tie.

Why is the Windsor knot wrong? It's the only knot I've ever used but what about this tie makes it the wrong knot?

CBD = Conservative Business Dress. Which is not the only way to dress and not even how most people here dress.

The Windsor is just generally too big, try a half Windsor. It will look much nicer.

CBD is conservative business dress. I don't think the windsor is wrong; I'm in the minority around here on my appreciation of the windsor knot, as well. You can decide what that means, lol. It is not a very good windsor knot, however, and I would practice getting a more defined, triangular shape to it, and a better dimple. I don't consider dimples de rigeur, as many do, but they are better most of the time, and I think it's a necessity for this tie.

I think a four in hand, or double four in hand could look very good here, too, and possibly better. Best thing to do is try them all, and look in the mirror to see what you think looks best. You need to like what you're wearing, not just the collective of style forum.

Right ok. As I'm sure you can tell I am knew to this. I work in a hotel so do not want to spend a lot of money when the likelihood is my clothes will get ruined by food or drink or hard use. However, I'm bored with the black suit/white shirt/solid coloured tie every day. I have been looking on here for inspiration but without the feedback and reasons why and how you gents put your outfits together I would just continue blundering along throwing in a pocket square etc. and I believe that things should be done properly so thank you all for your input and many apologies for my rambling.

Drakes has some large print paisleys I like, in nice fall madder colors and texture. Almost bought one this fall.

Don't apologize, we all start somewhere. You are trying to learn, which is more than some can say.

Any opinions on these combinations? I'd like to wear this pink shirt on palm Sunday, but not sure which tie is best. Does the purple work? The bottom photo is a white shirt, top two light pink.

So, tonights lessons learned
1)orphaned jacket cannot be used as a sports coat
2)garish patterned tie needs smaller knot and less contrast with shirt
3)pocket square should NOT be matched with tie

when in doubt, wear navy, white and dark brown suede biggrin.gif

No. Purple tie with white shirt is ugly. Pic quality is poor but none of those ties look nice. Why such a dark suit on a spring Sunday?
