Professor Pingson: it is indeed, hence the thumb rather than any F or C words. :)

I fully expected minus-thumbs even for this tie today. But in a world ... where one man's  journey ...can only begin... with an ending... I have no idea what I'm talking about.

Who cares if you LIKE the tie. Wear that $hit with pride...but I would light that $hit on fire if I ever ran into you...

Nabbed it. But what saddens me is that an excellent user name "Linen" was taken by a bot.

Oh I am... there's Styleforum, and then there's everything else. I'm proud of my gold Canali tie with the swishy design, in the real world. In SF, I know its not gonna be getting any love. I know it doesn't pass muster. I know its "wrong". But hey, that's the dichotomy right there!

Almost every item of clothing has its niche. But that tie makes it very difficult.

The only niche I can think for it would be a very cheesy - but very fun - summer evening look: cream linen suit and white shirt. Would be hilarious; friends would love it. Beyond that, not so much.

The trousers look to have a blue tinge to them; might just be the photos. If they are a somewhat steel-blue type of grey, i'm not keen on them in this look. A paler, more grey sort of grey would be better IMO, for the contrast.

But at least in terms of what I can see on this monitor, I don't think it works, not only because the waistcoat is much more formal and very differently styled than the jacket etc. but because the tone of the grey is very different from the tone of the jacket. There are some truly 'neutral' greys, but many are not as neutral as people seem to think. There are greys which are colder and more green or blue and greys which are warmer, whether creamier and yellower, or richer and browner or more red. You can see this much more clearly when you put greys against each other (and this includes patterns which resolve to grey from a distance, like your jacket). In this case, for me at least, the tones are not quite compatible.

But, as I said, it could be my screen; when you are trying to take an interest in the subtleties than make an outfit not just 'good' but superlative, it's easy to be defeated by technology...

The colour balance is indeed terrible, throwing the colours off, and it would be easy for me to claim that's the sole reason the greys don't quite mesh.

However, in hindsight, i do agree that the greys don't quite work together. It's not as harsh as in the photo but the problem you highlight is there anyway. I'm not sure it's the waistcoat/jacket though. I think it might be more trouser/waistcoat. A slightly paler trouser and I think the harmony would have been better.

In any event, I greatly prefer the look I did today for consideration for this week's creative 3pc challenge:

I really don't think there's anything WRONG with the tie. SF will say what they will say but it is you who have to process it and decide what you want to do. I personally think the tie looks terrible BUT if you like it then that's your personal preference. BUT make sure you always have an open mind towards the good people here and listen well to their constructive criticisms. If you love that tie, wear it. SF isn't the Bible, I say that with all due respect.

I'm good with the tie but I was thinking the PS was a little out of place.  :hide:  full disclosure I have no idea what I'm talking about when it comes to PS's but it's jarring to my eye's with the overall composition.

I like your description Holdfast, I'd like to go to that summer evening party!

In my defence, I didn't actually buy this tie. A friend gave me a bunch of ties that he was clearing out, a couple of gems (which got good thumbs here) and a few dodgy ones. This was certainly a dodgy one. I shall be passing it on, most likely. But like I said, I promised I would wear each of them once, and this was Goldie's turn. :D

Like the PS and shoes HF.

I get that. I'd be mad if I didn't think it was edging towards the ridiculous, esp when I can plainly see what makes a good tie a good tie, both here and elsewhere. My comments have been a little tongue in cheek, in fact the whole wearing of this tie has been tongue in cheek. I didn't have anything important on today. :)

There's things I see here that I dislike but get loads of thumbs, and I'm like "really?" But I know its down to taste rather than right or wrong - I'm aware of the various 'rules' of menswear and aspire to be better at following them. Sometimes a lapse in taste can draw into contrast your really good fits. And sometimes you just don't really give a f**k. :)

Good point. I sometimes don't get all the thumbs up. Like people say around here don't gauge based on thumbs up. Although they are somewhat reliable. I get thumbs up but I look like shit. LOL
