I think this could have been a killer look with a navy (preferably solid) tie. It would also have worked better with the square

I would suggest striped shirts if you want to incorporate patterns, candy striped if you are less adventurous and butcher striped if you feel a little more daring. Graph check shirts can be pretty hard to to get right (although your example looks OK to me). I have a graph check shirt myself and I almost never wear it, striped shirts however, I wear a few days every week....

Have this blazer I really really dig, but had no idea what to pair it with. Got some help from some great folks (hat tip gents in the ask a question thread) but I think it worked out pretty well.

You lookin' at me, punk?

Texture/tie area close up. And yes I know I know, I need PS'. I'm workin' on it!

Break shot. (they don't crease like that when walking)

Socks are boring today.

Breakdown/Thoughts (Click to show)
This entire getup was around the blazer because I think it's awesome. It's a wool Strathmore blazer by Anderson Little, which means it's probably mid range-ish. Fine with me. Black was the safe choice so I went with it for shoes and pants. The blazer is loud enough as is.

Pants aren't notable, but they're volcom. I think they look good though. After wearing these, I think I'm going to start buying longer pants because I like the way it looks when the pants kiss the top of the shoes. They flow better that way. I like showing my socks and shoes with less length. Anyway, all my chino's/khaki's might be a little shorter, but I'll definitely go the right length for slacks.

Shoes: Made in USA JM's. They're really comfortable.
Paul Frederick Tie. Express slim fit shirt. I like the collar.

I badly need to add a solid navy and solid burgundy. Pretty basic, I know, but presently lacking as my solid navy was lost to a coffee spill and the burgundy I just no gots.

Did a quick DTO (at least of the pose) of one of the four classiest posters here (upr_crust, clarinetplayer, Holdfast, and of course you, dear reader)

Pants are Wolf vs Goat. @Mauro has done a couple of pairs that are very MC friendly and obscenely well made.

Details on pants. Worth clicking for a close up of the fabric alone. (Click to show)

A good deal of handwork, canvassed waistband. Just really, really good pants. I cannot recommend these enough.

I would've donned on a navy blue tie.

Dude, love everything about that getup. Do you have any rounder glasses? I'm curious how rounder tortoiseshells would look on your face.

re: your comments

I kinda like the tie. It's a bit funky and I enjoy it. I wouldn't wear it to an interview though. I could have gone navy though. Seems like there's a dislike for patterned ties with a border on this forum. Considered dated? Or just too loud?

Glad to hear the fit is getting better. I think I know how things are supposed to fit and fall now. As far as the pants are concerned, I could have grabbed a pair of black suit pants I have so there's that option for next time. I'm revamping my wardrobe though. Good chance I start donating stuff as I replace it with better alternatives. I'm not in any rush, so I'll probably keep thrifting and build up that way. Slowly but surely :)

Too evidently an orphaned suit jacket, I'm afraid.

thank you, rtc. these are my only glasses. i have tried rounder frames, and they do not work. i have a round face, and when i add round frames to that, i look like a bloated macys day parade balloon.

as for your fit, please dont take this the wrong way, but i think that tie is really bad. maybe others would disagree, but i dont imagine many venerable SFers would. ties like that, and large multi colored geometric print ties, tend to look they were bought at burlington coat factory imo. no hate to you, but i think you need to keep lurking and understand more what makes a great tie, and a great fit in general, here on SF, and what is appreciated by SF standards.

now, there are other standards out there, and maybe in other circles thats a great tie, but not here as far as i can see.

as to pants, black suit trousers worn alone are not going to get ANY love here. i mean, i guess with a gray SC they can be maybe ok (probably not), but i cant recall the last time i saw a pair of black trou at all in a nice MC fit, outside of maybe with a dinner jacket. the ones you have on now look like old beat up chinos, and are in stark contrast with the more formal and polished top block. top and bottom really need to jive for a fit to succeed.

and the shoes are also just about as anti SF as orphaned black suit pants.

but, your fit is getting better, as are your combos, and keep in mind, you are just getting started. its a long journey. i have been here over 3 years and im still trying to up my game and find my groove.

please dont take this as antagonistic, i am just trying to help. and the only way to learn, is to hear the stark and honest truth. that what i got here when i joined, and still get when i miss the mark, and im glad for it.

keep on truckin and dont give up.

I followed this same advice from MrD last month, and my quality of life has improved by the addition of a yellow tie. I intend to add more.
