If this opinions keeps popping up you should try to understand from where it came from. Tailors developed it. Why? Because the jacekt looks more balanced if the width of the lapels are equivalent to the width of your shoulders. Some unbalance with a purpose, but the general advice from someone who buys a RTW jacket is too buy a balanced design.
In his case you can see perfectly the result of narrow lapels, it weakens the subjects, gives a more jovial feel to him. In my opinion, Orge outfit makes him to look like an American undergraduate from the 50's, but: hey, it's my opinion.

That has more to do with his stylistic choices (which I like) than thewidth of the lapels imo. I understand the issue of proportion and balance in regards to suiting and traditional dressing, but you do know that slim lapels can work on many people. I think Og's lapels are fine though

Today's ensemble consists of: $6.99 Goodwill "tweed" jacket (70% poly/30% wool), $3.99 light blue Nordstom dress shirt (thrifted- sleeve buttons need moving), faded blue jeans and $3.99 loafers (Goodwill). Pic N/A. bigstar[1].gif

Color palette is fine, except for the square which looks like a puff would be better. I'll just post a few bullets:

Overall, it just looks sloppy.
Collar points look much cleaner when they reach under the SC lapels. Maybe button up the SC for better results, or get a better spread collar.
Tie is way too short here, cartoonish. Get that tie to your belt-line. It's so distracting it ruins the outfit for me.
SC fit looks pretty good, although the sleeves could use a half inch shortening.
Pants look nice enough, but there isn't enough of them to make a full determination.
A four-in-hand knot would help once you get the tie length right.

Here's today's effort. No square as I wore my cream yesterday, and I don't like how stark the white cotton is against this SC. When in doubt...

Very next level with coordination between tie (superb BTW) and socks icon_gu_b_slayer[1].gif
Trousers look very nice too. Still think you would benefit from slightly longer jackets....

I don't like that type of collars... I think it's a good combo, except for the PS. nod[1].gif Oh and the short tie... nop.

The bit about balance is a fair comment, well made, I've often seen a rule of thumb suggested that lapels be half the distance to the shoulder. I'm sure there's room for some variance here and my own preference is for them to be on the slim side of that equation, but it still seems to me that people posting pics of lapels that you could land a jumbo jet on will get jizzed over, while narrow(er) lapels seem to get almost universal stick.

I was a kid in the seventies. I can still clearly remember the decade that style forgot, and have no intention of going back there despite the efforts of Messrs. Foo and Ford.

Agreed, 100%, that's why I used the word outfit and not lapels. Nothing wrong with them either, the ensemble just looks dated, IMO, and wider lapels would avoid it.

It's important to make those stylistic choices consciously, that's what originated my original comment. The jacket was made like that, so nothing can be done, but it's a dated look (slim lapels with disproportionated silhouette), so I thought that the comment was fair in a way that I'd bring the attention of others to it.

thanks, meng. smile.gif

not only cant you please everyone, i dont think it meant to be to please everyone. too many different, and viable, tastes, imo.

i try to get the socks and tie to come together if im wearing bright socks, otherwise, as pointed out by others here, they stick out as off.
