Thanks butch. for 1, what color shirt would you suggest with that tie? ive had a rough time finding something that works.

It's actually its use with the dark jacket which bothers me. Holdfast's suggestion of darker brown and cream might improve it, but ultimately I think you need a lighter jacket with that tie. Shirt is fine.

I will ask for opinion on the tie below with today's outfit only because I was about to pull the trigger on it (it's shorter length, which would be the icing on the cake).

Probably better with a solid or bengal stripe blue shirt, though:

700

Do it.

thanks!

I'm responding without reading anyone else's comments so as to give more independent advice/avoid herding, so apologies if I'm repeating what others have said (also apologies for just being blunt with comments, I know you don't mind and know that I like your style generally):

1) That tie is really gorgeous. But this jacket looks almost black? And looks kind of suit-jacket-y? If the jacket is as dark as I think it is, then the tie should be different. And then in that case I think black shoes would be better too.

2) The tie and pocket square are fighting each other. This would be a good spot for the white linen square that foo.gif hates so much. I'm also not sure about the shoes. I think I'd want a darker brown. But both these first two fits are having something of an identity crisis, unsure whether they are "city" (dark jacket in the first, three piece suit in the second) or country (brown shoes in both, the brown tie, the suede shoes)

3) I think this one is the best of the four, at least except for the pants, which should be gray flannel or even better some donegal. Quibbles: Jacket is too short IMHO. Square looks kind of lame, don't know why. Maybe it's just my dislike of red. Shirt collar seems to be sagging down a bit, might be just the picture.

4) This one's just not working for me...don't like the jacket, the shoes or the socks. Or the scarf, although if it weren't branded and worn with something else I might like it.

Much appreciated...and i agree i think...
1. jacket is a navy blazer, and thats the issue...too dark. thats probably why ive never really loved it
2. I knew the PS was wrong the second i left. i hadnt worn it in awhile, and thought id givbe it a go. its navy with red dots, but ends up just looking navy. darker brown shoes woulve been optimal, but these are sadly my only suede shoes right now and i wanted to try em out.
3. agree on all counts. although i tend to prefer my jackets a tad short.
4. not much i can say....youre right, but i still kinda like it as a casual. wink.gif

Nah, the PS bit doesn't bother me. The scarf does really wash things out. Though honestly scarves are a functional garment first so meh. Plus you're wearing a graph-check'y shirt, my fave pattern. Works nice with the jacket too.

I have a tie in the same color - but a large glen plaid pattern - and Sugarbutch may not believe me here, but every time I try to wear it with a dark jacket I never feel comfortable because it seems too light for the jacket, and so I never wear it now. If I had to wear it at least once in the next year, it would be in spring time with a wheat-colored jacket and a pale blue shirt.

I'm indulging in a bit of p'cockery today. The PS plumage is more prominent than I intended, but it's in line with the rest of the effort:

Probably just the lighting, but the jacket looks a bit blousy. Assuming that's not the case, completely unobjectionable. And, if it's your commencement, congratulations and good luck!
