Alright. Good to know guys. They are accurate. I think I'm just not used to such color combinations.

 

Darker brown would've been better though, right? I need to get some darker brown ties anyway. As soon as November is over and I'm free from Man of Lint's watchful eye, they will be purchased.

I think that jacket gives lots of opportunities as far as tie matching goes. Solids in complimentary colours, big prints etc. the one you're wearing works too. Personally, I would probably have gone with something like this:

Claghorn, with such a sportcoat (which is very nice, by the way) I think the most important factor is to keep the tie casual. It looks like a black and white houndstooth, right? If so, most colors will work. Try some wool knits, challis, ancient madder... and avoid white shirts with it. You did well with the herringbone, too.

Black white...and olive. It's the olive that make it tricky.

 

And yeah, one thing I've become aware of in these last few months of forum membership is matching levels of formality. I had already been getting my jackets tailored before joining, and I had a decent eye for color. But I was wearing very formal shirts with very informal jackets, or formal shirts with informal ties. Understanding the importance formality in different elements of the outfit is probably the biggest thing I've learned so far (and I'm sure I'll learn quite a bit more)

Wool SC, cotton shirt, ancient madder tie, silk PS, corduroy pants

Yes, actually most often that I have seen they don't look good on shorter guys. They usually look better on taller guys > 185cm where there is a bit more torso to play with and length of legs to offset the apparent length of the jacket. Button placement is also very important on a 3 button in that the second or middle button is the primary one.

Unfortunately I agree that it's a cacophony. Certainly the worst fit I have seen from you of late (and I only say this because you usually get things pretty much dead right): there is no coherence between the top and the bottom halves of the outfit, the cord pants are significantly too casual for the rest, the tie doesn't seem to work with the jacket (I can't quite work out why) and the shirt is just not nice.

^ If I just had a clean solid blue shirt... I knew skipping yesterday's laundry would do more harm than good 

 

The patterns clash badly, but everything here is casual in nature though; the madder tie, bold striped shirt, check SC, multi-coloured square. cord pants and brogue shoes. I don't think it's incoherent?

This is an extremely roomy fit by SF standards, but I think it works really well on your build. Excellent.

Great outfit, although like most people on here, I prefer pairing grey suits with light blue rather than white shirts (cf. http://www.styleforum.net/t/309772/how-to-wear-a-white-shirt), especially when considering the brown tie.

Herringbone shirts work in all contexts, but I'm generally not a fan.
