Firstly, IV, I think you've come a long way from your early days here. Gone are the times of looking like a try-hard fraternity kid who wandered into his dad's closet. Good on you for the evolution. You seem to be making your way into a classic haberdashery sort of style. It's very unique for these times, and it almost always results from someone working (or being raised) in a traditional menswear retail environment. As Bill has stated in the past, % is the best example of a honed haberdashery style. Bits and pieces from here and there that might stick out at times or initially mark a fit as awkward, but, at the end of the day, somehow inconsistencies are eclipsed by the sum of the whole. I hope you will fully commit to continuing to learn and I'm intrigued to see where you go from here.

I think it needs to be remembered that he works in retail. All menswear retailers (from Sid Mashburn all the way down to Men's Warehouse) have a certain style or tone that they like their employees to adhere to. Having seen what others in his shop dress like, I think SS fits into his shop's environment quite nicely. One of the most underrated aspects of style is appropriateness and awareness of one's surroundings. While his looks aren't meant for the boardroom, they accomplish the goal in mind when put together.

I am off to dinner at Restaurant Daniel this evening, and, considering the formality of the venue, I decided to "push the boat out" a bit, stylistically.

Stitches, I'm hearing all this talk of improvement...but not all of us have been members of SF since the dinosaurs roamed the Earth. I don't suppose there is any possibility of before pictures to put the whole thing into perspective?

Welp, when i first joined, and for a while thereafter, my choices were often subpar. I may have them somewhere in my photobucket, i did do a lot of deleting. If i can find them, maybe ill post a progression, even though it will be quite embarrassing for me.

EDIT: Fair enough. I had briefly posted an absolutely dead embarrassing picture of me. Just. fucking. awful. I tried very hard not to delete it...but I couldn't stand it. It was that awful. Holdfast and Flying Monkey may have seen it.

If it's actually that embarrassing, don't do it. Having that picture up was a terrible, terrible five minutes for me.

stitchy, something's definitely recently changed for you; the colours are playing much more nicely together over the past couple of weeks.

Rather a busy day to round off an equally busy week. On the go since mid-morning, with assessments all over the county. Still found time to advise a custody sergeant how to tie a bow-tie in preparation for a weekend event of his. I think his request implied approval of my own effort; at the very least, we got out the police station easily... :)

I am enjoying bending a few MC rules today and revisiting the colours I used to spend a lot of time in, but hopefully in rather more well-fitting and considered way (even if it's not MC approved). Charcoal (well, black) velvet Prada suit, light gray OCBD, skinny black and grey Barney's Co-op wool tie, silver tie bar (+unseen Testoni austerity brogues and black socks).

I think this is a load of horse shit excusing poor taste/style, etc. If someone is in the circus and is dressed like a clown, while it may be appropriate, they are still dressed like a clown.

I have to agree with Ant Honey on this. While conforming to his environment might mitigate SS' culpability somewhat, it doesn't change the fact that the outfit is a mishmash of discordant elements, colors, and textures.

You're totally right. A guy working at The Gap should definitely wear a three piece bespoke suit everyday because he's read on the internet about fancy men's shit.

I'm sorry. I completely forgot that surroundings and circumstance should have no bearing on what you wear. Thank god SF is here to tell me what's objectively right and wrong. Especially when it pertains to what is normal and acceptable in one's work place.

And forget branding or communicating an image. All that marketing bullshit is for not. I mean it's never worked, right? And certainly there are no other companies/stores/organizations out there that try and keep their employees to a similar standard. Just ask Dig. He LOVES wearing a black Dri-Fit polo everyday.

Really I think the only thing completely out of place here is the vest. I think it's forced for sure. However, a pair of Nantucket Reds, a conservative navy blazer and silk tie are far from discordant. The fit (of the jacket) is actually quite nice. And while I won't cosign the pant roll, that again goes with adhering to one's settings.

Regardless, you should be a little more respectful.
