Probably, but I think it's safe to say it's done as a fashion statement.
Such a good movie.
i want to hate the hat, but actually like it. Not sure about it AND the strongly-checked jacket, though either individually in the look would be fine.
I like this suit (would like it even more with normal pockets) but think black shoes/bag would complement it better. Also, I have an irrational dislike of that kind of glossy/high-shine striped tie. Even though I think I own a couple myself...

Tough to tell from the pic but the suit is a glen plaid pattern. The tie is from Vineyard Vines and has thin silk. To achieve the correct length I need to tie a full windsor.
I think the Windsor looks fine with that collar. Honestly I don't get why so much hate for this knot on the forum. Have you tried a double FIH anyways?

I'm not saying it looks good, just giving the reason why a fashion conscious individual would wear a button down unbuttoned. It's not just because they don't like button downs, it's evidently because they think it's trendy and cool.
Personally, if I wear a button down collar, I'll wear it buttoned. If I don't like button downs then I wouldn't wear one. If I wear one and have it unbuttoned then I'm either lazy, fashion ignorant or think it's trendy/cool. For most on here I think we can rule out the first two.
