I do think that there's a high level of failure when MCers go casual and that they should be able to pick up some cues (on silhouette, materials, layering, specific products) by looking at what SW&D does.
I thought about this more, and I think that the Tumblr #menswear tag is better for MC guys interested in clothes beyond orthodoxy.
It's the sort of thing that didn't exist when the WAYWRN thread was divided in two, and it is far better than either today for a post stream that is updated throughout the day.
The pants looks wide. I dont know about the hat looks funny. You look young you should dress more hipp then a old man ( will be nicer to dress like this when you are older )

I will continue to dress like on old man. It started when I was three and it will end when I am dead.

...that's exactly it. When I see those SW&D "fits" in suburban back lawns or in the homes of parents, it really doesn't work for me.
The MC crowd has its own similar sins arife, of course.
I want to point out that this photo isn't a fair representation of SW&D. It was rightfully mocked by virtually everyone. I think both sides are guilty of plucking some of the more poorly executed outfits from the other side and using it as justification for negative generalizations about how everyone on that side dresses.
FTFY.
In my little SF advice column, one of the things that I poorly try get across is that it is useful for beginners to examine on what point of the informal/formal spectrum their life lies, and taking cues from that. I feel (without being able to offer convincing evidence) that the current MC crowd might benefit from a toning down of the level of formality in their coat and tie looks.
You, in contrast, have thought about this. More power to you...which takes me to...

Has this guy just got tooth ache, or is he a salesman for body encapsulating nylon blankets.
