The main advantages of the D90 over the D3100 are slightly tougher build quality which allows for better handling and easier access to controls. It will also take older AF lends that don't have a built in motor.

Image quality wise there's next to nothing between them. The D3100 has a newer sensor and a few more pixels, but 12mp are plenty.

The packaged lens is the same on both kits and whilst it's not the most solidly built lens in the world it gives decent image quality for the price.

Personally unless you're a photography enthusiast I'd go for the cheaper D3100, and if you're a photography enthusiast I'd save up and get a D300 or better.

This is fantastic advice. I've got to keep remembering that 99% of the time the images will only be going on the web.

Will that lens serve me well for both arty Macros and the manequin shots?

Thanks again

Indeed, you'd probably be fine with an 8mp sensor given that your product shots will rarely be more than about 800x1000 pixels. Put your money into good quality lenses and maybe pick up some lights to aid with shoots.

Yup - am going to have a look at cheaper bodys. Would ideally like one with a swivel LCD. I've often found that really useful

It won't do true macro's but it will do decent close-ups. If you want to get down closer you'll need to budget around £300 for a micro-nikkor. It'll be fine for manequin shots.

There aren't many DSLRs with swivel LCD's this one does:

I think Olympus do one for under £500 too (no real experience with modern Olympus cameras, so can't directly comment on quality). I think Canon's 60D has a swivel LCD but that's getting a lot dearer (and no sane person would choose Canon over Nikon ).

I'm just unboxing the Nikon D3100. Seems perfect from what I can see from the reviews etc.
Thanks again for the advice.
