Evan Rachel Wood is getting all sorts of buzz for a special wig she had to rock for an upcoming HBO project ... a wig that was custom built for her crotch.

The "True Blood" star is slated to go full frontal in the HBO miniseries "Mildred Pierce" -- and at a recent NY press event explained, "Let's just say, I had to wear a wig because it was in the 30s, and everything had to look like it was in the 30s."

According to Wood, her co-star Kate Winslet encouraged her to do it -- "I looked at Kate and she was like, "˜You've got to do it. Trust me, it's so brave. Put a merkin on and you'll be fine."

Apparently, she's not a method actor.

As a danny downer aside - how vapid is our society that her actions are considered "brave"?

Oh, I have no problem with using the word 'merkin' in a sentence. It's responding to the blanks stares and requests for explanation that give me pause.

Incidentally, it also kinda sounds like the womanly equivalent of a fake beard and eyeglasses that's often caricaturized as a common disguise. Oh - don't want people to recognize your girly parts? Throw a merkin on and no one will recognize your hoo-hah.

Pubic hair is disgusting.

I suppose a well-disigned merkin is better than a combover.

Though depending on the situation, razor bumps can be much worse.

A little bit of wispy hair is more my style. A waxed cooch makes me feel like a pedo.

Really? I think fucking chicks that are younger than your oldest child should make you feel like a pedo. But I'm still jealous.
