Douglas-san,
I'm going to recommend North Square, a hidden gem located underneath a small tourist hotel on the northwest corner of Washington Square Park (Babbo is just down the block). Very good food, in a quiet, elegant but totally non-fussy enviroment. You should easily be able to get an early reservation, and the food is uniformly topnotch. Nothing molecular, but will satisfy those yearning for something a little more cuttin edge. Your dad will enjoy it, as will everyone else. Non-trendy deliciousness, in very civilized surroundings.
