Has anyone read The Physiology of Taste by Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin? I'm currently in the middle of it, and it's quite a fascinating read.

One quote I like particularly:

"A dessert without cheese is like a beautiful woman with only one eye."

A soft eye socket is an underrated alternative.

spoken like a true frog. brillat-savarin is much admired, particularly for his aphorisms. reading the full books is a bit of a slog.

Great book, bought an edition from 1870 when living in Paris. "Whoever says 'truffle' utters a great word which arouses erotic and gastronomic memories among the skirted sex and gastronomic and erotic memories among the bearded sex."

what's the book about?

it sounds interesting. would you recommend it?

it's one of those 19th century oddities ... the musings of a gentleman gourmet. being french, he likes to make rules and bon mots. seriously, it's a good book in spots, though much of it is scannable. it's probably best known in the us because mfk fisher did a very fine translation of it for her first book while sitting in the carrels of my beloved downtown los angeles library.
