Saddest thing is, Larkin followed his own advice.

It's also depressing because it's (partly) true.

My Dad always said:

"If you want something done - you will always find a way. If you don't - you will always find an excuse."

Whenever I feel like giving up, I always remember this and it helps me keep going.

One time Dad told me this story. As a kid, he witnessed a lynching in McKinney, Texas. It was sort of a carnival atmosphere. Everybody knew it was going to happen, and showed up in the square to watch. He asked his father why they were doing it. His father told him "They're good people. They just have bad ideas."

Plan for retirement. My dad has made 6 figures for the last 20 something years, is 62, and still has years on his 4K+ mortgage (yay housing bubble) and no clue how he's gonna pay for his retirement. Granted, the economy hit him with the perfect shit storm, but even w/o it he'd prob not be in much better shape

I want to be mortgage free by 55 & hopefully finished working a 9-5 by then too.

I had to read Sonny's Blues in college. I'll check that one out since Baldwin is earthy and readable.
