LTE 4G is a different technology that will require a different radio inside the phones that Verizon sells. This way Verizon can keep its CDMA technology for phone conversations and use LTE for data. I think Verizon is currently testing voice over LTE but I'm not sure if they will release phones with LTE only radios anytime soon.

Frankly, I see cell service disappearing within 10 years. Ubiquitous Wifi and Satellite phones will be the future.

Sat phones? So Iridium wasn't a $5 billion boondoggle, but rather just an idea ahead of its time? But yes, I agree, at some point wifi will take over. And then finally voice communication will sound like normal human speech.
