Cheap travel.

Anyone got any suggestions?

I'm inspired by Jet Blue starting fares out of here (Columbus, OH) -- NYC/Boston for about $50 a shot, which is great. I'm eager to see a lot of places (especially international), but limited by student funds.

My best suggestion is to go to the source. Say if you are flying to Japan, go to a Japanese travel agent. Doing so saved me about $300 this August. I was looking at ticket prices to fly to Tokyo on the 31st of July and return on the 31st of August. AAA with my discount said $1200 and Expedia $1300-$1500. While in Seattle for a car club meet/BBQ I went to AA Travel (specializing in Asian travel, including Japan, Korea, China, Vietnam, etc). Through them I got my round trip ticket for $900. August happens to be an expensive time of the year to go to Japan so when I go early this next summer it will probably cost me closer to $500-600 round trip. Prices were similar with my girlfriend's travel agent in Tokyo.

It has been years since I regularly traveled to the far east, but back then it was much much cheaper to have my guy in Singapore buy the tickets there and mail them to me. About 40% cheaper. That is probably what you experienced also.

There really is only one way to do this. Work your ass off during the summer and school year, spend nothing. During the next summer get an open ended flight (basically a roundtrip ticket with flexible dates). Pack a bag with 4 days of clothes, a good camera, guidebook, railpass and a great book. Fly to Asia or Europe after school finishes. Follow what interests you. Just plan 3 or 4 days in advance. Stay in hostels, befriend locals, talk to anyone and everyone. Take lot's of pictures and drink. Meet a girl, fall in love. Return home a week before school starts; regale family and friends with what you saw. It will be the coolest thing you've ever done. A.
