A common meal at home when we were kids was a couple of burgers (no bun), potatoes and vegetables - just another meat & two veg.

Given the fact that burgers in some places have grown to absurd sizes, I sometimes leave the top bun. But completely without the bun seems rather pointless to me.

Agreed. A few years ago when I was a server at one of the local country clubs there were a handful of people who did that, I think it's Atkins. Most of them were obese.
