Please satisfy my curiosity about fellow obsessive-compulsive organizers. How do you decide which ties go where on your rack -- or in whatever system you use?

I go mostly by color, but I'm starting to get into algorithm territory.

By colour grouping, but there are two exception groups - i. ties to be worn with tweed and ii. cotton ties

I don't see width as a variable to sort by!

I'm currently contemplating an algorithm for my ties right now. One thing I realized is that knit ties should be rolled, thus necessitating their separation from the others. I will post a detailed developmental and contemplative post soon.

I keep them all rolled in a big drawer. Drawer is has sectionals (Ikea). First colours assigned to section, and then within the colour section by pattern.
and then there is section for random stuff.

I don't appreciate your calling me a douchebag.

I just hang them, but it's probably because I don't have to wear ties often.

Autobiographically.

If I want to find my Brioni grenadine I have to remember that I bought it for someone in the fall of 1983 pile, but didn't give it to them for personal reasons.

I'm a ******* NUT. I organize first by width (3-3.25 inches) and (3.5" and wider) and then by color. I then further separate between English, American and Italian. I then split spring summer/fall winter/4 season ties Its complicated, as is my closet. Sometimes I'll separate them by how many wears each tie gets on the third Tuesdays of a month when the moon is at apogee. I need to have fewer ties. Ok, so the Tuesday tie thing was a joke, the rest wasn't.

Had mine arranged by colour on a rack of 20. Then I got more than 20 ties ...
I now have three racks, one for solids and grenadines, one for repp stripes (No differentiation between English and American), and the third split between regular patterns (spots checks etc) at one end and a few irregular patterns from the early 90s which are no longer in vogue but I still like them and willmwear again o e day whenthe mood strikes. All sections go dark to light!

Edit:
After typing that I just went to split my repps into English and American. That part is easy enough but then it's not so easy to go dark to light as if the stripes are of equal width you can't really say which is the dominant colour.

OCD? Who, me? Nah!

This is perfectly normal. I have about 100 ties. I need to do a similar organization system.

Colour --> Width --> Material/weave.

They also sit betwen my suits and shirts on the rack, as if forming a symbolic and sartorial bridge between the two.
