2009 Kellerei Kaltern Vernatsch/Schiava. Ok, but not overwhelming.

Craving for some rum, and only bottle I have is a Bacardi Superior... I made a Cuba Libre with 1&1/2 oz of Bacardi Superior, juice of half a lime, and filled the rest with coca-cola. Not the worst rum in my opinion, but it kinda tastes bad I really need to get a bottle of Ron Zapaca or El Dorado, but wasn't able to find any in stock the last few days unfortunately.

Well, you don't need Z23 for a Cuba Libre...
Cuba Libre comes from Cuba, Havana. So the only appropriate rum is Havana (3 años).
If you however want a Guatemala Libre and are willing to pay about 10$ for it - okay.

But in general you are right, Bacardi is overhyped crap.

Speaking of rum, my local store just started carrying El Dorado 12. After Cuffthis' recommendation in the rum thread I decided to purchase it. I just finished two fingers with an ice cube and let a mint leaf float in it. Absolutely delightful. I may have found a new summer tipple.

Woops, haha I meant that since there was only Bacardi around I mixed it to satisfy my rum craving because I can't really drink Bacardi rum neat. Otherwise I would have drank a Zacapa or some other good rum (neat). I don't drink a lot of cocktails containing rum, so I guess I'll check out Havana some time. All the websites I looked at simply said "light rum, coke and lime" for a Cuba Libre, so yeah

Nice! Any big difference between a El Dorado by itself and a El Dorado with a mint leaf?

The only difference is that the second one had a mint leaf in it. Seriously, it really didn't do anything but give a somewhat light freshness to the nose when you really stuck your nose in there. Plus, a rum soaked mint leaf is delicious to chew on once you are done with the drink.

I know it's not necessarily proper, but it was enjoyable.

Granted. Other cocktails with rum.. try out Valderama! (2cl Malibu, 2cl Havana 3a, 3cl lime juice, 10 cl tonic water.. really nice) Or Mai Tai (3cl white rum, 3cl dark rum, 1.5cl Curaçao, 1.5cl almond syrup, 0.5cl gomme syrup, 1cl lime juice... shake everything besides the dark rum (you float it on top))... Obviously Mojito is awesome, too.

2 parts Eagle Rare bourbon, 1 part St. Germain elderflower liqueur, dash of Fee Bros. bitters, garnish w/ cherry. This was an experiment...not sure I'll be repeating it.
