For real. Finally tried it at a nice bar the other day, been looking for it at liquor stores ever since. Tonight is an Avery night. We're hosting a horizontal tasting of the brewery, so lots and lots of Avery. My pallet is going to be deadened by hops by the end of the evening.

I'll be joining you after dinner with some BT over ice. A little sipping Bourbon while we watch a movie.

Hopefully, should have some fun drinks this weekend. Tomorrow night (Halloween) we're going to a torch light ceilidh, so plan to sip mucho single malt

Saturday night, found a new place to try, from last week's big wine tasting. The owner assures me there will be foie and Sauternes for me when I come

Holy crap, I'll bet you sleep well!

It certainly helps to slow the mind down after working late, so you can get to sleep easily.

Excellent ceilidh last night. I sipped black and tan for the most part, but had about ten samples of single malt. They had a little "village pub" set up with around 10-12 single malts for sampling, and it was pretty popular

Lots of neepies and mash, mince, etc. to eat too

Wow, Pio, that sounds like fun. 10-12 single malts to try is a pretty good variety. Anything worth mentioning? I'm always on the look out for a new single malt to try, especially something with little-to-no peat.

Just opened a 2005 Cantina Vignaioli Barbaresco before dinner. Very, very agreeable.

Has anyone tried the brand new Ri(1) rye whiskey? It seems to be marketed as a super-premium rye whiskey. It is obviously one of those new gems of marketing that are surely not worth their price ($50) and certainly nowhere near the quality that they claim. But, nonetheless, I am curious as to how it actually tastes. I may end up buying some if it is significantly better than Sazerac or Old Overholt, if not simply to use in a Sazerac cocktail.

Nah, just the usual suspects, and some of them more peaty or iodine than I like, like Oban. But it was all included in the price of attendance, so who was I to say "no"?

You know what I'd like to see? More Japanese single-malts available in the States. The only ones you can get here are Yamazaki 12- and 18-year-old. Some of them are supposedly very impressive.

It was either last year, or the year before, that a Japanese Scotch won "Best Scotch" of the year. I agree, I'd like to try more.

Yeah, that was a Yoichi expression. I can't remember which one off the top of my head. I've heard that Japanese single-malts don't mimic scotch but that they're very good nevertheless. In my book, more variety is always good as long as quality remains high.

I've been staying away, mumbling snobbish demurrers about terroir and authenticity and soul, while keeping the secret, known only to me, that I just don't need my liquor list to get any longer.... ~ H
