I usually think of burn as referring to the alcohol burn. Which is entirely independent of flavor- I consider something like Laphroaig 18 to be very smooth, but, just a hunch, it's probably one you would put in the excessive iodine and peat category.
I do know what you mean about something being challenging to drink though- iodine and peat are great for me, but really strong peppery notes can slow me down, though that's usually a problem I run into with bourbon or rye.
