D - I'd have to argue with you about the Barrel Proof being better than Zacapa 23.
Personally, I can't refer to many, but for one I like the Ron Varadero 3 a lot better than the HCA3. Then again, it's an amber rum, but they cost the same and share enough commonalities. I just like it better. Some other Cuban rum I can't comment on: Legendario, Mulata etc. At least eh Legendarios seem to review decently at the rum howler blog.
You've just been to Cuba, so maybe you can prove me wrong but I think that the low-end HCs tend to not be the best value. Like I said, I can't comment on their top shelf stuff.

on the basic level mulata is superior and on the higher end edmundo dantes
legendario and varadero are comparable certain varaderos are slightly better though.

(But I guess it's a good idea to at least try them once... so you may as well ignore this post completely)

A taste of apple, citrus and most of it honey. It's very sweet, you just feel the vintage when drinking it. Very pure and I would say it's one of the best coutet I have ever tasted. Would give it maybe 9/10 points.

Thanks for the input!

And FWIW, I somehow talked bs. Of course, Varadero 3 isn't more or less an amber rum than HVA3 is. Both are, so it's a reasonable comparison. I don't know whether I'd pass a blind test -- I guess the fact that HVA3 is just so widely available and Varadero is a smaller (I think) company influences me -- but anyway I still believe that I prefer V3.

Oddly enough, they really don't serve much outside of Havana Club. The 3 silver, 7, and very occasionally the barrel were everywhere. Rarely, I'd see the Varadero 3. I never once saw the HC Especial.

What was the go-to longdrink (locals)? Mojito or Cuba Libre?
Also, how pricey was the rum (HC) in relation to food? I've heard it's recently been made more expensive. Not sure whether that's true.

Mojitos, usually. CL's were big too and so was just straight rum.

HC was cheap as shit. Bottles of the 3 were around 7-8 and the 7 around 10-12. Drinks while out would run you about $2 a pop. Sometimes cheaper.

Ten Cane rum with an ice cube. Bought a bottle for mixing, but discovered it's a great sipping rum on its own.

Mount Gay "extra old' is gotdamn delicious. Straight, rocks, then little lime and demerara simple syrup. Shit is legit. Searching out the less obvious brandy-ish rums (zacapa, etc...) and enjoying this here Mount Gay, Barbancort Five Star and Appleton Extra Reserve. A little more bite, but seem to have a non-cloying complexity. Don't get me wrong, I love Zacapa. Hell, even some gifted Pyrat was pretty damn good (I wanted to hate it). Also, have had the Havana Clubs and really dig 'em. I find Ron Matusalem to be a decent substitute, but would like to taste them side by side.

Also, that Coutet '64.... never seen a sautern looking like a tawny. Damn, love an aged sautern, but that looks phenomenal.

I did not like the Pyrat at all. Not sure what it was, but it had a very intense flavor that I didn't care for. This will sound crazy, but almost like over-ripe banana.
