Has anyone here watched the series Chasing Classic Cars on Discovery? The man that refurbishes all of the cars on the show lives by me.

I grew up helping my dad prep his cars for showing...I distinctly remember cleaning the front wheel well of his '64 Bentley S3 with a toothbrush, when I was still small enough to fit into a wheel well.

It was one of the highest ranked cars in Rolls Royce Owner's Club history, and my dad had to sell it when my folks divorced.

True story: we were in the final round of consideration for best in show at the annual RROC meet, having already taken Best in Class. Another car, a spectacular early '50s Silver Wraith that arrived at the meet in a custom-built lucite panel truck along with a team of restorers, was several points ahead of the rest of the competition until...a judge noted that at least one of the fuses had been replaced with a length of plain copper wire. DQ'd for a safety violation!

We wound up taking second best in show - "Rolls Royce of Canada", instead of the "Rolls Royce of North America" trophy. Our team of restorers was me (aged 12 or 13), my dad and my mom. My dad had gone on ahead of us with the car, and my mom and I rode down on Amtrak. I spent the trip sanding, priming and painting a pair of replacement valve covers that we installed the night before the meet. The car had been sold to my folks with Rolls Royce valve covers, which fit but were incorrect. We found the correct pair of Bentley covers in a junkyard in upstate New York a few days before the show, took them down with us and finished prepping them on the way.

Somewhere, on film.

At one point in my late teens I "borrowed" it, picked up a friend who was a reasonably skilled amateur photog, parked on a tree lined lane and took a bunch of glamour shots, one of which I had blown up and framed. My dad still has that shot in his office. We spent the rest of the afternoon annoying people by pulling up next to them at traffic lights and asking if they had any Grey Poupon.

Here's a pic of an identical car (that's not me and that's not our car, but it looks just like it). Sand over Sable, right hand drive, body by Mulliner Park Ward.

At one time our car had belonged to a famous british millionaire and member of the house of lords, who lost all of his money following some scandal or other and had to sell it off. Can't remember his name, Richard Slater maybe? It was purchased by an American student at Cambridge, who brought it home and gave it to his parents, who lived in Manhattan. They very rapidly got tired of paying to garage it in NYC, and put it up for sale cheap. In 1980 my dad paid $10,000 for it (a little less than he paid for a Toyota Tercel that same year). In 1995 he got $25,000 in a fire sale. The car had been cared for by a chauffeur for the first 15 years or so, so when we got it it was absolutely pristine. The biggest "restoration" that we did was the valve cover replacement.

That's some find. I'd love to restore a classic car with my son someday (if I have a son, that is).

I think I found the original owner: Jim Slater, of the "Slater-Walker" affair in the UK in 1975.

My friend had one of the largest classic car collections in the world.

There were over a 1,000 cars and they were going to be donated to a classic car museum in Houston. He died prematurely, and now they are being auctioned off, and there will be no museum.

He was really strong on Duesenbergs ( probably the best private collection in the world ), and some oddities like the Batmobile, the Popemobile, and a Tucker.

It turns out that he paid premium prices for most of the classics and his estate will not recover 100% of what he spent to buy them. The real tragedy is that there will be no Houston classic car museum, which was definitely what he would have wanted with the cars.

One of his favorites was this 1936 Duesenberg SJ with Bohman and Schwartz coach work, that was literally built for a Maharajah
