Social Clubs

I recently received an invitation to a membership event at a rather prestigious social club. I won't be able to attend the event, as it's scheduled for my wife's due date, but I am intrigued. As someone who grew up poor and attended a rather unremarkable university, I have absolutely no experience with these sort of places. Are any of you members of such clubs (I'm sure you are)? Would you recommend them? Is there a chance I could actually meet The Man?

Any club that lets me in is not prestigious enough.

I don't belong to a social club, but I've visited quite a few, both with and without restaurants. It might be worth the expense if you have clients you need to entertain and you can deduct the fees from your taxes as a business expense. Otherwise, spend your money elsewhere.

I was a member of one for a while, gave it up about two years after I moved away. Have since moved back and could reactivate but did not. I did enjoy it and the facility was great but I literally lived two blocks away back then. It doesn't make sense for me now.

I still go to a lot of events at various clubs and I do like them.

There's a little boat club on the canal alongside the Potomac in Bethesda, MD. I have no idea what goes on there, but I would be happy to be a member of that club, and to use their boat bridge.

You have most certainly met, and may actually be The Man.

As a young man I belonged to a social club that was based around a blind pig on the second story of a walk up on one of the main streets in the city I was living in. The booze was far cheaper, the guy's wives often brought in home cooking and it was great to be young and able to drink until 5am at a "private club."

There are a few in DC. However, some have parties open to the public so I see no reason to join. I'm sure there are more exclusive and less 30-year-old-missing-the-fratty-days than the one's I'm thinking of (Capitol Club), but I don't really care. I'd consider it if I was approached to join.

It reminds me of that Seinfeld episode where he gets the membership club jacket stolen by one of the Flying Karomozov brothers.

I had lunch at the University Club today.

Solid.

Where do you live, OP? In my experience, city clubs are pretty useless unless

a) you need a place to play squash
b) you want to impress people
c) you're a retired white dude

I am an active freemason and also a high ranking member of the Illuminati...

Not really all it's cracked up to be.

Boston. It's an old club that may have some membership overlap with the Illuminati.
