I am too exclusively using combs of Kent Brushes.

@Caltex, unluckily I don't have a camera.
As long as my hair is slightly wet or if I am not in a lot of motion it lays the way I like it to.
Only thing I am looking for is a product to support my hair to stay in place while I am walking around.

Nice post on the last page there @patrickBOOTH, that looks excellent. Any chance you can give me a first hand description of Lush's The Big Tease or how it might work on straight hair?

Furtheremore, I need some hair advice...I have VERY straight hair that grows from my crown straight down to my face and I have been rocking the "textured, choppy" look for way too long now (probably about 6 years). I'm looking to move on to a more grown up look. Also thinking about growing my hair out as a possibility, not sure if I will ever be able to tuck it behind my ears and let it flow out the back though.

I'm intrigued by your quest (from the last page) there @Louis XIV, what is your hair like? Is your hair poker straight like mine? Mine is quite thick so when I try to rock that look (from the picture) it just goes straight as an arrow over to the side and there is no wave or curl in it. (ie: the look in that football picture you posted. )

Basically looking for ideas on cut, style, and product/technique.

Here is me, as of today:

The Big Tease is like a jelly and it dries very fast. It is a flexible hold. I love it, but I go through about a jar a week.

Hmm there's a Lush not too far from my place so I might have to check it out. Cool that it's somewhat of a flexible hold, does wonders to your hair, haha.

If I'm attempting (probably foolishly) to grow out my hair, what type of product would you recommend for styling it in the meantime, during the awkward, medium length phase? I never know what product is good for what (pastes, clays, gels, gums, gel, etc.). I currently use a matte paste and it creates great texture but as I said, I'm trying to have it flow more and look less constructed, more free.

I'm afraid I'm doomed to have short, textured hair for a long time because of how straight and thick my hair is.

Try Lush's "Dirty" hair cream. Just a veyr little I think would do great in your hair.

Awesome, I might pick some up on the way home from work.

How do you think I should use it with my hair? Use a small amount and run my fingers through my hair sideways or back (back is what I want to do, but since my hair grows straight forward it's given me fits in the past) or still style it upwards/spiked? Combo of both, haha?

Thanks for the advice patrick.

Just use a bit and rub it in your palms and mash it up in all directions in your hair just tospread it evenly, then just use a comb to push it in different directions until you get it how you like it.

I am using American Crew fiber and when I am done applying the fiber my hands are really sticky. I have to wash my hands a few times for it to go away, anyone else have this problem?

How do you clean the residue left on your brush?

@Skim, my hair isn't growing as straight as yours.
When growing longer my hair becomes curly and several cowlicks/hair whorls(had to look these up, no idea if its the right expression) dictate where the hair is falling to.
For myself there is no other solution than to stick with short hair.

I would like to try something like this but it just doesn't work, but maybe for you?

Don't do it. Find an expensive salon. Not a Supercuts. I am totally serious.

American Crew Fiber never worked for me. I know a lot of people like it, but I hate the stuff. Try the firm hold styling cream that comes in a tube, not a jar. But yeah, residue is just the way it is. Wash your hands and be done with it. Every so often I put my comb in the dishwasher and it comes out clean as a whistle!

Thanks for the reply Louis. That kind of style is the end goal for me, just not sure what to do in the meantime. What kind of product could I use to push my hair back like that but keep it natural and flowing? Right now all I have is a matte paste and it creates good texture but it is rigid and instead of my hair folding or flowing back, I just look like sonic the hedgehog because the paste makes it spikey and rigid. I wish my hair didnt grow straight down ala dumb and dumber...

I too came here to ask for a product which supports/shapes the hair without making it look greasy but natural, but haven't found the answer to it yet, sorry mate.
