I think I'm going to try my luck at tomatoes. I live on the east coast, so it might be a bit easier and more manageable than growing them in the California heat. I'm not sure which variety yet.

actually, tomatoes crave heat. my problem is where i live in california we'll only sporadically crack 75 until mid-august and sometimes even until september.

I see. I just haven't been able to find myself a worthwhile tomato in a very long time. I don't get it. They either lack all flavor, or have a very odd texture. I did, however, find some very tasty green zebras last year, slightly unripe, that I made an agrodolce tomato/corn salsa served over grilled red snapper with. That was very good.

green zebras are good, but they are usually picked underripe (when ripe, they're kind of a goldish-green). good thing about tomatoes is that they will continue to ripen if you leave them at room temperature. whatever you do, don't refrigerate.
