Museums in NYC

A friend and I will be the spending the day in NYC in a few weeks and we would like to check out a museum or two; what are some of the cooler ones to visit? I'm most interested in history, swords and the like. Any suggestions?

I've always really enjoyed the Frick. Viewing the architecture of the house alone is worth the price of admission.

To me the coolest museum in NYC is the Frick.

But if you want to see swords, you go to the Metropolitan Museum. Cool stuff like that there.

I don't know about swords, but if it's medieval history that interests you, you might want to check out the Cloisters.

The Met hands down for arms and armor type things. They have a huge collection from all manner of different periods throughout history.

I am partial to modern and design and architecture so obviously I would recommend MoMA as well as the Whitney and the Guggenheim depending on what exhibition is running. If you have limited time though the Met will be the most bang for your buck/time since it has the largest and most diverse collection of art and historic items.

The Met. It has some of everything and the arms & armor are just awesome. The Frick and Whitney would be my next suggestions, particularly with the Hopper exhibit at the latter. MoMA is just a zoo.

Second the recommendation for The Cloisters. Beautiful place - a little difficult to get to but worth it. Also, if you have some time to kill in the Midtown East area, the Morgan Library is worth checking out.

The Met is magnificent, but I always make the same mistake each and every time - pick your spots to visit in the museum first rather than just wandering through hoping to take it all in. I end up exhausted every time and miss half the stuff I really wanted to see in the first place.

If you r interested, like I am, in Napoleonic era swords and arms. They have nada, zero, zip, nil at the Met. Otherwise a great museum for a half-a-day visit. If you get hungry there is an Austrian museum 3 blocks up with an excellent Viennaese restaurant.

I'm a fan of the Tenement Museum. Very informative and a great peek in NY's recent history. The tenements of the late 19th/early 20th century are disappearing fast, so it's wonderful to see them before they're gone.

This is the Neue Galerie"”one of my favorite museums in NYC (as demonstrated by my avatar), if only for the truly magnificent Adele Bloch-Bauer I. (It was more magnificent before they covered it with protective glass.) I didn't mention Neue Galerie only because it didn't strike me as catering to the OP's interests. In any case, it actually has two restaurants. Café Sabarsky gets all the press, but Café Fledermaus is much easier to get into and serves essentially the same food.

I don't know about napolenonic, but there are a bunch of weapons at the Met. Then wander down and see Neue Gallarie and have lunch or something at sabarsky. I was there this past sunday.

The gallery is short and sweet, but worth seeing. I don't know if the erotic drawings are still there, but damn.. the girl I was with almost jumped me while we were there. That was quite unexpected.
