Went and looked at the selection of Mariage Freres teas and sadly they didnt have the one I wanted so I settled for the The Vert Marco Polo which I must say is nice.

What are the opinions on lapsang souchong here?

I am an avid coffee drinker that used to start his day with a fresh espresso (or 5). Lately i've been wanting something to switch with that espresso at times and ended up being advised to try this tea..

fwiw, i like the smokey flavor, but it lacks punch (allthough I shouldnt be looking in teas for punch imho)

Been there done that with the greens, whites, etc....just can't get into them. Although a good oolong is a great find. Every once in a while I splurge on a Dong Ding.

Mariage Frères is good. Kusmi Tea is not so good imo. I like the Marco Polo cooled in the summer. I've tried out Opium Hill (Thailand.. funny thing is that the tea in the sample box in their store smelled exactly the same like brewed Fujijama, the new bought tea not really), Tamaryokucha, Fujijama (both JAP) at home. Not sure anymore what I tried out at their Salon de Thé. All three are great teas. Pu-erh really is some kind of special. Not a fan of it. Not at all. Kukicha.. well, I prefer others but it's a nice variation. I'm not totally into black tea yet, but sometimes an Earl Grey or Assam is good. Haven't bought one from MF so far though.

Any opinions on Rishi teas?

Tried their Jasmine Pearl green tea... kicks butt, but maybe too pricey ( for some of us ) to be a staple...

When I first got into Tea, I actually went with Rishi since they were the only loose leaf vendors I could find locally at Whole Foods. Jasmine Pearl in general will be pricey, in fact Rishi's price is on the lower end.

The only complaints I've heard about Rishi are that their tea may have been sitting around on the shelves for several months (no labeling info on packaging). However having just recently gotten into Tea, my palate isn't sophisticated enough to tell the difference between a really fresh batch and one that's been sitting around a while.

Although because of their fairly cheap prices, I've gone to them to try out several teas:

Earl Grey (was quite good, so far the best I've had was Rishi)
White Peony
Wuyi Oolong
Pu Erh

Enjoying some Upton River Shannon breakfast blend (TD20). Only tea I can take with milk and sugar. (For some reason I find English Breakfast to be flat out nasty, can't handle the Keemun base, gotta be an Irish Breakfast based w/ Assam)

Mm tea. Been sampling a few first flush darjeelings. Really like the Jungpana at the moment. Staples: Bukhial TGFOP Coconut Bongo - infused oolong Mate of any sort - I've been drinking a lot a blend that's toasted mate with almond and cocoa Rooibos of any sort Mount Everest - a white/green blend with curry leaves, pepper, and corn EDIT: Thanks to the people who mentioned Upton. $9.20 flat shipping to Canada is sweet. And the prices are cheap, too.

^ Great to drink. Even better to cook with. I have this excellent concoction of Lapsang, chipotle, pepper, chili, cumin, etc. that's great on meats, seafood, and roasted veggies.

Currently in Southern India atm and will be heading out to find some quality tea vendors. Hopefully looking to find quality Assam. Unfortunately I can't head out to the actual gardens/production regions.
