Motorcycle in Manhattan

I moved to NYC, sold my car and am kind of wanting to drive a motorcycle here. What the heck is the process, exactly? Does anyone have recommendations for good motorcycle driving schools? My car was stick but I understand this is a whole other beast.

Do you have a current NYS license? If you still have your old license, I would recommend getting an mc license in your prior state. The NYS licensing process, while not difficult, is a pain in the ass - you have to supply a bike (but can't ride it there), a car for the examiner to sit in, and a driver for the car. So basically you have to find a friend with a mc license and a car to take half a day off so you can get your license. It's the dumbest process in the world.

But to actually learn to ride one? Take the MSF course. Closest one is in Suffern, I think. Or buy a Honda Passport/Cub and go to a parking lot. You can pretty much figure it out in 15 minutes if you can drive a stick...

What were your reasons for selling your car? Based on the reasons, owning a bike may not be any less of a hassle than owning a car. I'm not trying to be facetious, but judging from your OP it sounds like you think owning a motorcycle will be much easier than having a car. It may or may not be based on your situation.

Unless you have a place to store it I wouldn't do it. For getting around the city nothing beats a bicycle. If it's a night on the town take a cab or the subway.

If you leave anything outside in NYC is will get ruined, thats just the way NYC is. No one respects personal property.

Agreed, I do 90% of my riding in NYC because I love my bike, but it is definitely faster to be on a bicycle. Parking is certainly easier than a car, but I have a garage and wouldn't leave it on the street.

Off topic but I used to be an alley cat junkie. I saw enough people get hurt really bad that I had to stop. But the adrenaline rush was insane.

I owned a bike when I lived in Manhattan. Basically because I've never been without a bike since I could own one. But of all the places I owned a bike, it was among the worst. In the end, I actually ended up parking it in Queens because I had a one car garage out there. If you have to own a bike because you have to own a bike, you'll put up with the pain of it, just for the occasional opportunity to go to Harriman (cops!) or take it to CT/W.Ma. If you just want to get around the City conveniently, get a bicycle, or (at most) a Zuma 50cc.

i just bought a 1979 cb400. im in the process of converting it to cafe... but i kinda fear riding it into the city... i live in brooklyn

btw. arebikes allowed in express lanes ?
